Husband and wife working together to escape poverty.

In Sao Luoi hamlet, Khanh Binh Tay Bac commune, Tran Van Thoi district, the couple Ho Thi Thanh Xuan and Lam Van Khoi are a prime example of perseverance and overcoming difficulties to escape poverty.

Unwilling to accept poverty, the couple utilized their family's approximately 6,000 m² plot of land to invest in crop cultivation. Working diligently together, they achieved a stable income. Initially, the work was difficult, especially during the dry season, when watering the crops required a lot of time and effort.

Ms. Xuan said: "When we first started, my husband and I faced many difficulties. We had little capital, limited experience, and harsh weather conditions, but with a strong will to succeed, we encouraged each other to persevere every day, learning from those who came before us as we went."

With years of accumulated experience, Ms. Ho Thi Thanh Xuan and Mr. Lam Van Khoi are confident that they can successfully grow off-season vegetables.

Through hard work and diligence, the family now earns 6-7 million VND per month from growing vegetables. Compared to before, their lives have gradually become more stable, no longer struggling to make ends meet. After three years of continuous effort, Ms. Xuan's family has officially escaped poverty, not only providing for their daily needs but also accumulating savings, building a new house, and having the means to support their two children's education. Currently, their eldest child is about to graduate from university, and the other is in 12th grade.

Recognizing the efforts and hard work of Ms. Xuan's family, the Women's Union of Khanh Binh Tay Bac commune recently introduced and supported her with an irrigation system worth 10 million VND from the "Water is Life" Project. This system helps reduce the burden of irrigating crops during the dry season, creating favorable conditions for the family to expand production.

Ms. Xuan shared: "I am truly grateful for this irrigation system because it will be much easier for me now. I no longer have to carry water for irrigation, and I have more time to do other things."

With the irrigation system, farming has become easier and more efficient, giving the couple more time to care for their family and plan their next steps for economic development. "Now that we have the irrigation system, I plan to plant more cabbage, amaranth, bitter melon, and gourds during the dry season, because the supply of vegetables is limited then, and they sell at higher prices. If we succeed, our income will be much better," Ms. Xuan calculated.

Ms. Xuan received support in the form of an irrigation system worth 10 million VND from the "Water is Life" Project.

Growing vegetables out of season not only increases income but also makes the most of available land. Although she knows that growing vegetables out of season will have many difficulties, with her determination and years of accumulated experience, Ms. Xuan believes she can do it.

Ms. Duong Hong Nhung, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Khanh Binh Tay Bac commune, highly praised the self-reliance and resilience of Ms. Xuan's family, noting: "Ms. Xuan and her husband's economic model not only helped their family escape poverty but also served as an inspiration for many other households in the hamlet. With willpower and hard work, anyone can overcome difficulties and improve their lives. In the future, the Women's Union of the commune will continue to implement models to support poor women members, helping them develop their economy, stabilize their lives, and achieve sustainable poverty alleviation."
