According to data from Canalys, the smartphone market in the second quarter had total sales of 288.9 million units (up 12% year-on-year). Thus, the market recorded growth for three consecutive quarters.
Data shows that Samsung sold the most smartphones with 53.5 million units, capturing 19% of the market share (down 2% from last year).
Coming in second is Apple with 45.6 million iPhones sold and a 16% market share. Following that is Xiaomi with the biggest sales growth in the top five -27% with 42.3 million devices, a 15% market share.
Vivo ranked fourth with 25.9 million phones sold and a 9% market share, showing a strong year-on-year growth of 19%. Fifth was Transsion - the company behind the Tecno, Infinix and iTel brands - with 25.5 million units sold and a 9% market share.
Canalys predicts the smartphone market in 2024 will grow more than last year.
In 2025, as consumer demand remains uncertain, especially in developed markets, vendors should focus on delivering innovative smartphone experiences to attract upgraders, build a distinct brand image, and strengthen operations in markets to capture new opportunities, said senior analyst Toby Zhu.
