China Midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai suffered a thigh injury in a friendly match against Uzbekistan, losing 0-2 on the evening of October 13, and will have to rest for about a month.

In the 10th minute of the match at Dalian Stadium, Quang Hai collided heavily with an Uzbekistan player and needed medical attention. He played for another seven minutes before colliding a second time and had to leave the field on a stretcher, making way for Nguyen Hoang Duc.

This morning, the midfielder born in 1997 was taken to the hospital for an MRI scan. He was diagnosed with a torn right calf and will need to rest for about a month.

Quang Hai will miss the final friendly match against South Korea on October 17, and will also miss the first two matches of the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against the Philippines (November 16) and Iraq (November 21). At the club level, he will miss the first three rounds of the 2023-2024 V-League with Hanoi Police, respectively against Quy Nhon Binh Dinh (October 22), HAGL (October 28) and Hanoi FC (November 3).

This is not the first time Quang Hai has suffered a calf injury. At the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines, he tore his left biceps in the group stage match against Singapore. He did not play in the final match against Thailand, the semi-final against Cambodia, and the final against Indonesia. In the 2020 AFC U23 Championship finals, Quang Hai returned to play but was not in perfect physical condition.

At the AFF Cup 2022 in December, Quang Hai also suffered a thigh injury in the opening match of the group stage against Laos but could not return immediately in the next match. When joining Pau FC in the 2022-2023 season, the midfielder from Hanoi also suffered an injury that forced him to rest for a month.

In 2023, Quang Hai only played 25 matches in all competitions with 1,879 minutes - an average of 75 minutes per match, and had one goal and two assists. The 26-year-old midfielder's performance is not as good as before 2021.
