Order a glass of water, sit for hours

Accordingly, some websites in Vietnam shared the translation from the Daily Mail (UK) about the information that the Fringe and Ginge cafe in the UK has just made a bold decision "not to accept customers bringing laptops to work".

According to the newspaper, Alfie Edwards, the owner of a cafe in Canterbury City, said he opened the shop in July 2020, after the lockdown in the UK was lifted. That was the peak of remote working, with thousands of people working only via laptops and communicating online.

However, it is the people who come to drink coffee and work on their computers that are ruining the atmosphere of the coffee shop. Moreover, this situation makes the shop always full of customers but the revenue does not increase.

“They often ask other customers to turn off the music, keep quiet so they can have online meetings while just drinking a glass of water and sitting for hours on end,” Edwards explained.

Then, although it was very difficult to move from thought to action, he finally succeeded.

Alfie Edwards has put out a notice saying that people who bring laptops to work will no longer be allowed. He and co-founder Olivia Walsh believe that people who want to work should go to the library or rent other space instead of the cafe. At the same time, the owners say they are still welcoming and want people to have a better experience.

Since the laptop ban, Edwards has observed more conversation among customers. Even strangers have become friends. Some come to the bar to relax with their neighbors.

“That connection became a community in the cafe. We didn’t want to hurt anyone, but it was the right decision,” he said.

Many people praise

Posts about the first coffee shop to ban customers from bringing laptops to work are getting a lot of attention. Most people agree and think that this decision is the right thing to do.

Many opinions say that coffee shops in Vietnam that are not specialized for working people should also learn this method to take care of the right type of customers that the shop is aiming for.

Bao Han account wrote: "A tough and polite way, because when the restaurant has announced that the customer broke the rules, the restaurant has the right to react. Many restaurant owners in Vietnam do not announce that customers are prohibited from bringing laptops, but are always annoyed with this group of customers when they sit for a long time, use electricity and only order a glass of water."

Many other accounts recount situations where they go to a coffee shop and have to "walk softly, speak softly, and smile charmingly". If they want to chat, they have to look at the faces of customers who are busy working at the shop because if they laugh loudly, they will be told to be quiet so they can work.

Account Hai Yen thinks the shop's way of doing things is very good and respectful to customers. "Setting rules will give the right group of customers the best experience because currently many people who go to coffee shops feel uncomfortable having to keep quiet while customers work on their laptops.

Nowadays, there are many coffee shops for office workers. Young people who want to work in a coffee shop should choose the right shop for their needs," Hai Yen said.

Quán cà phê để nói chuyện hay làm việc? Coffee shop for talking or working?

Many people find themselves in a situation where they ask friends to go out to a coffee shop to chat but don’t dare to talk. Or there are cases where they go to a coffee shop to work but can’t concentrate because everyone around them is talking about their own things.
