Qualcomm has just launched a new chip called Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, which will be equipped on mixed reality devices from Samsung and Google, competing directly with Apple Vision Pro.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip can run Android apps, suggesting the company could release a more affordable wearable than Apple's Vision Pro.

The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 is a step up from the older Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, which is used in the $499.99 Meta Quest 3, supporting a sharper display and improved graphics.

“Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 unlocks 4.3K resolution, taking augmented reality performance and entertainment to new heights, such as room-scale immersive visuals, life-size overlays, and virtual desktops,” said Hugo Swart, vice president of augmented reality at Qualcomm.

Qualcomm is a chip supplier for a large number of VR and AR glasses on the market. In addition to Samsung and Google, the company also said that many other technology companies have contacted about the next generation Snapdragon. Currently, Qualcomm's chips are used in popular virtual reality devices such as Meta Quest Pro, HTC Vive XR Elite, Ray-Ban and Pico 4 Enterprise.

Last year, Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google announced a partnership to develop mixed reality devices. Patrick Chomet, vice president of Samsung Electronics, said at the time that the company was developing a roadmap for mixed reality products, but declined to provide details.
