Two weeks before Christmas, the Cathedral, the Old Quarter and many shops in Hanoi are filled with colors and lights, joining in the festive atmosphere of the year-end season.
The Great Church, at 40 Nha Chung, Hoan Kiem District, is the center of every Christmas in Hanoi. Before the ceremony, the front yard of the church is decorated with a 15-meter pine tree. Every evening, the pine tree and the church are lit up, attracting hundreds of domestic and foreign visitors. The Christmas nativity scene is located in front of the Cathedral, depicting the story of God's Son coming to earth as a human in the Bible. On Hang Ma intersection with Hang Dong, employees at a shop finish decorating a Christmas tree and displaying merchandise.
After Halloween (October 31), Hang Ma Street switches to selling Christmas decorations and becomes bustling from the beginning of December.
Accessories that many people choose to buy during Christmas are wreaths, gift box models, ivy, red bows, strings of lights and brightly colored decorations.
According to Western legend, families often hang laurel wreaths on their doors 4 weeks before Christmas. In addition to signaling the great holiday season, laurel wreaths also mean inviting guests and wishing each other peace. In Vietnam, many families, shops, and Christmas decorations now cannot lack this item on the door.
Hang Ma Street sells many items such as Santa Claus models, pine trees, and snowmen. The street is always an attractive destination for shoppers and visitors.
Mr. Tang Van Ninh, 26 years old, said he started selling decorations at the end of October. "The number of customers during Christmas is still the highest of the year, many people go out and visit," Mr. Ninh said.
Diverse items, prices vary depending on size, ranging from 50,000 to millions of dong. Coffee and cake shop on Le Thai To street, Hoan Kiem district, decorated with many red bows, pine trees, cathedral bells and laurel wreaths. A shopping mall on Dinh Tien Hoang Street is decorated with many Christmas trees and gift boxes in bright yellow and green colors. The coffee shop on Nha Tho Street is decorated with many Christmas accessories such as bells, snow, and reindeer. The lobby of a hotel on Nha Chung Street is decorated with a large Christmas tree with sparkling lights, gift boxes and a polar bear model underneath.
According to staff, the hotel decorates for Christmas each year with a different theme, starting from the end of October until Christmas. This year, the hotel is expected to keep these models until near Lunar New Year.
The section of Hang Ma Street that intersects with Hang Ruoi Street is bustling with shoppers from early evening. Many young people choose to visit and shop early to avoid crowds near the holiday.
