Vietnamese film wins 2 major awards at Venice Film Festival

The film “Rain on the Butterfly Wings” received two awards at the International Film Critics Week within the framework of the 81st Venice Film Festival, including the award for “Best Film”.

The movie Rain on Butterfly Wings ( English name: Don't cry, butterfly) by director Duong Dieu Linh has just won 2 awards at International Film Critics Week (International Film Critics Week) within the framework of the 81st Venice Film Festival.

The first award the film received was “Most Innovative Film”, judged by a panel of international film critics under the age of 35.

Actress Tu Oanh plays the main role in the film.

Sharing when receiving the award, director Duong Dieu Linh said: “Just a few days before the world premiere at Venice, the actor asked me, ‘How does it feel to finally live your cinematic dream after working so hard?’ I told him that I had been living the dream for the past five years, working with such a great team.”

Immediately after that, the film continued to be named for the important title of "Best Film" of the program. International Film Critics Week (Settimana Internazionale della Critica). This award is presented by the international film critics council with a prize of 10,000 euros (more than 270 million VND).

The jury praised the film's originality and creativity, describing it as “a blend of comedy, social tragedy and fantasy, while also portraying the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship.”

The second time she received the award, director Duong Dieu Linh was moved to tears. She invited producer Tan Si En, mother and daughter actors Tu Oanh and Bui Thac Phong to receive the award with her.

Actress Tu Oanh shared: “I could not have imagined that the last name to be announced for the most important prize of the Settimana Internazionale della Critica in Venice this year would be "Rain on the Butterflies". I went up to receive the award with everyone else and choked up. Early tomorrow morning, I will call my children's grandmother, grandfather and grandmother, and send the photo to our small family group of 5 people.”

It is known that, Rain on Butterfly Wings is one of 7 films selected from 700 works worldwide to be on the list of first feature films competing for the award. 10 years ago, at the 71st Venice Film Festival, Vietnam also had a work competing in this category: Flapping in mid-air by female director Nguyen Hoang Diep.

Right after the Venice Film Festival, Rain on Butterfly Wings will continue to attend the Toronto Film Festival - one of the prestigious film events and where many works go on to win Oscars each year. The film will also continue to attend the Busan Film Festival taking place in October, in the program A Window on Asian Cinema.

Rain on Butterfly Wings is a film co-produced by Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines. The film tells the story of mother and daughter Tam (played by Tu Oanh) and Ha (played by Nam Linh) who ride a motorbike to fight after discovering that her husband, father (played by Le Vu Long), is having an affair on television while a football match is taking place.

Tam finds a witch doctor online in the hope of making her cheating husband change his mind, but accidentally awakens a mysterious supernatural force in her own home.

The film will be released in Vietnam in the near future.
