Korean horror films dominate Vietnamese box office

"Exhuma: Tomb Raider" has just been released in its first week at the Vietnamese box office and immediately created a fever with overwhelming revenue, approaching the hundred billion dong milestone.

According to the independent box office statistics website Box Office Vietnam, in the first 3 weekends from March 15 to 17, the film earned more than 65 billion VND. As of the morning of March 18, including early screenings and pre-sold tickets, the film had reached a revenue of more than 92 billion VND. The impressive figures above help the film become the Korean film with the highest opening week revenue of all time in Vietnam, surpassing Bong Bong So (2022) with about 27 billion VND.

Tomb Raider sets many impressive box office records

Previously, the film also continuously set records such as: top 1 Korean film with the highest sneakshow revenue of all time in Vietnam with more than 8.7 billion VND after only the first 6 hours of screening, with more than 1,400 screenings.

According to Variety, as of March 18, the film has surpassed the revenue mark of 67 million USD after 4 weeks of release, becoming the highest-grossing film in Korea in 2024 up to this point.

The film was written and directed by Jang Jae-hyun, and stars Choi Min-sik, Kim Go-eun, Yoo Hae-jin, and Lee Do-hyun.

The movie is currently a hit in many Asian countries.

The film revolves around the story of two magicians, a feng shui master and an embalmer who join forces to excavate the cursed tomb of a wealthy family, in order to save the life of the last descendant of the family. The dark secret of the ancestors is awakened, threatening the lives of the whole family.

On IMDb, the film received a score of 7.4/10 from more than 1,200 reviews.

The film's impressive and overwhelming sales have caused the remaining films to cool down significantly. Notably, Kungfu Panda 4 - the film that led the box office in its first week of release and set a record for the highest opening weekend for an animated film in Vietnam, has been pushed down to second place this week.

The film's total revenue in Vietnam up to this point is more than 96 billion VND. Globally, the film currently has a revenue of more than 176 million USD. At the North American box office, last week the film remained firmly in the number 1 position with 30 million USD in revenue, above Dune 2 with 29.1 million USD.

Kungfu Panda 4 is about to reach the revenue milestone of 100 billion VND

At the domestic box office, Dune 2 also ranked behind Kungfu Panda 4 with over 3.4 billion VND. The film currently has a revenue of nearly 35 billion VND.

In the top 5 revenue of last week, Mai and Dao, Pho and Piano were in the following positions. Last week, Mai had a revenue of more than 2 billion VND, bringing the total revenue of the film to more than 547 billion VND. Dao, Pho and Piano currently have a revenue of nearly 16 billion VND (not including revenue from direct ticket sales at the counter).
