The film revolves around the journey of young conductor Sakura Kazuo (modeled after conductor Yoshikazu Fukumura) in his efforts to restore the activities of the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra (in the film, the Peace Symphony Orchestra) at a time when it was on the brink of having to stop operating.
Performed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan (1973 - 2023), the work vividly recreates the context of the country 3 decades ago. In it, conductor Sakura stands out by sacrificing great opportunities such as becoming the conductor of a symphony orchestra in her country as well as family happiness to come and revive the Peace Symphony Orchestra, through a month-long cross-Vietnam tour from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City.
The journey was initially difficult due to cultural and lifestyle differences, as well as the fact that local musicians were not yet accustomed to the conductor's direction, but thanks to their shared efforts and love for music, the gap was quickly bridged. The film portrayed the unique characteristics of the two countries, thereby sending a meaningful message about music, understanding and unity for a common goal.
The Sound of Vietnam features many famous names from both countries. From Vietnam, there are Meritorious Artist Chieu Xuan, Tung Yuki, Hieu Hien, Tran Nghia, Linh Son, Thua Tuan Anh... On the Japanese side, famous pianist Sorita Kyohei, who won second prize at the 13th Chopin International Piano Competition, also participates as a guest, alongside names such as Hamada Gaku, Higa Manami...
The work consists of 3 episodes, available for free viewing on NHK World's digital platform with Vietnamese subtitles until October 5, 2025.
