Experiments show that proteins in the above foods activate the immune system to prevent the growth of new tumors, according to medical website Medical Express.
Antigens found in foods, such as milk, peanuts, and eggs, are often the cause of allergic reactions. Even in people who are not allergic, these antigens are recognized by the immune system as foreign substances.
Eggs are great for overall health.
Researchers from the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences (IMS) in Japan previously discovered that food antigens activate immune cells in the small intestine. At the same time, some immune cells activated by gut bacteria become capable of inhibiting tumor formation in the small intestine.
In this new study, they wanted to test whether food antigens could prevent tumor formation in the small intestine.
The study, led by Dr Hiroshi Ohnom from IMS, tested mice with a genetic mutation that makes them susceptible to developing bowel tumours, similar to people with a family history of colon polyps - who are at higher risk of developing tumours in the small intestine.
Results have found that certain food proteins, such as those found in eggs, milk, or meat, may help prevent tumor formation in the small intestine.
Specifically, initial results showed that mice fed a diet without protein antigens from eggs, milk, and meat had more tumors in the small intestine than those fed a diet with antigens.
Proteins found in eggs, milk or meat may help prevent the formation of tumors in the small intestine.
Remarkably, in the next step, when they introduced a protein called albumin, commonly found in eggs, milk, and meat, into the antigen-free diet of the mice, they found that this method prevented tumor formation in the small intestine.
This suggests that the antigens in eggs, milk, and meat are key to preventing tumors, according to Medical Express.
The study also showed that consuming the antigens in these foods led to much stronger immune responses, especially T-cell activity, compared to a diet without the antigens. This also highlights the role of dietary protein in maintaining a healthier immune system.
From these findings, the researchers warn that people following a protein-eliminating diet should exercise caution, especially those at high risk of small bowel tumors, such as those with a family history of colon polyps.
