According to the Independent, French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Francois Bayrou as the new Prime Minister on December 13. Last week, Michel Barnier lost the position when he failed to survive a parliamentary vote of no confidence due to a budget dispute.
Mr Macron made the choice amid growing pressure to find a successor to Mr Barnier.
Mr. Francois Bayrou.
Mr Bayrou, a centrist like Mr Barnier, is a familiar name in French politics and media circles. His contemporaries include Sebastian Lecornu, a former senior Socialist official, and Bernard Cazeneuve and Xavier Bertrand, former ministers under Presidents Sarkozy and Chirac.
Two days before the announcement of the appointment of a new prime minister, a government spokesman said Mr Macron was looking for a political agreement that would allow him to appoint a new prime minister while "ensuring the stability of the country".
President Macron insisted there was currently no political alliance "broader" than the one between his centrist allies and conservatives from the Republicans, who do not have a majority in parliament.
France is considering two options for forming a new government. The first is to seek a "broad coalition", which would mean that in addition to centrists and conservatives, some leftists could join the government. That could give the future government a majority in parliament.
Another option would be to reach an agreement with left-wing opposition parties to commit to not holding a vote of no confidence – even though they would not be the ruling party.
Mr Macron has been holding talks with left-wing and right-wing politicians, who are now key players in efforts to form a more stable government.
The talks did not involve the far-right National Rally led by Marine Le Pen nor the far-left France Unbowed party led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon as Macron said he would only negotiate with moderate political forces.
In a 10-minute speech to the nation last week, Mr Macron accused the far left and far right of thinking only of themselves and not of voters, when they voted no confidence in Mr Barnier, criticising them as an "irresponsible alliance".
