The Thai Water Festival was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023. The event usually takes place on the first day of the Buddhist year, corresponding to April 13-15 every year. On this occasion, people bring water to the streets and pour it on each other with the meaning of washing away bad luck, praying for blessings, prosperity, favorable weather, etc. On the first day of Songkran, people carry Buddha statues in a parade, clean their houses to welcome the new year and start the water-splashing game.
