The Wall Street Journal on October 19 quoted former US President Donald Trump threatening to impose high tariffs on Chinese goods if Beijing "enters Taiwan", but still said that Chinese President Xi Jinping respected him.
"I want to say: If you go into Taiwan, I'm sorry to have to do this, I will tax you from 150% to 200%," Mr. Trump said about his intention if elected.
Trump threatens to raise tariffs if China 'invade Taiwan'
Asked if he would use military force if mainland China blockaded Taiwan, the Republican candidate said that would not happen because Mr Xi respected him.
"I have a very good relationship with him. I wouldn't have to (use military force), because he respects me and he knows me," he said in the interview.

Mr. Trump campaigned in Detroit (Michigan) on October 18.
Mr Trump has laid out plans to impose across-the-board tariffs of 10% to 20% on most imports as well as tariffs of 60% or more on goods from China, in measures he says would boost US manufacturing.
During the interview, Mr. Trump also spoke about the war in Ukraine, repeating his claim that if he were still in office, Russian President Vladimir Putin would not have launched the campaign.
"I told Mr. Putin, 'Vladimir, we have a great relationship. ... Vladimir, if you go after Ukraine, I will hit you so hard, so hard you won't even believe it. I will hit you right in the middle of Moscow,'" according to the former US President.
Trump exhausted?
In another development, Mr. Trump's election opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, on October 18 questioned Mr. Trump's ability to serve another term, after reports that he was "exhausted" and withdrew from many interviews.
Despite appearing on several pro-Trump television networks, he canceled interviews with NBC, CNBC and CBS. He also declined to debate Harris in a second time.
Politico reported that a Trump aide told producers at a site negotiating an interview that the former president was “exhausted” and had turned down several appearances. The Trump campaign later said the report was “out of touch with reality.”

"If Mr. Trump is exhausted on the campaign trail, it will raise real questions about whether he is up to the task of having the most difficult job in the world," Ms. Harris told supporters during a day of campaigning in several places in Michigan.
Mr Trump reacted angrily, telling reporters he had not cancelled anything and calling his Democratic opponent a "loser" with "less strength than a rabbit".
"What events did I cancel? I didn't cancel. She didn't come to any events. She's a loser," CNN quoted him as saying.
The former president also claimed that he had not rested for 48 days.
