General Luong Cuong, Standing member of the Secretariat, was elected by the National Assembly as President for the 2021-2026 term, at the 8th session of the 15th National Assembly on October 21.
The resolution on electing Mr. Luong Cuong as President was passed by the National Assembly with 440/440 delegates voting in favor. Previously, the National Assembly held a secret ballot to decide on electing Mr. Luong Cuong as President for the 2021-2026 term.

Immediately after the National Assembly passed the resolution, the new President Luong Cuong began the oath-taking ceremony before the National Assembly, voters and people nationwide. In January 2021, he was elected to the 13th Politburo, continuing to hold the position of member of the Standing Committee of the Central Military Commission, Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission's Inspection Committee. He was promoted to the rank of Major General in 2006, Lieutenant General in 2009, Senior Lieutenant General in 2014, and General in 2019. In May, the Politburo decided to assign Mr. Luong Cuong to join the Secretariat and hold the position of Standing Secretary of the Secretariat.
