Ultrasound tumor treatment, non-surgical

Professor Nguyen Viet Tien, Vice President of the Vietnam Medical Association, said that in 5 months from November 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025, 100 patients in Vietnam were treated for tumors with high-intensity focused ultrasound waves under ultrasound guidance (US-HIFU).

In these 100 patients, there were 55 cases of uterine fibroids, 41 cases of uterine adenomatosis, 2 cases of abdominal endometriosis... All patients had no complications after treatment. The results of re-examination after 1 month in many patients showed that: the tumor volume decreased by more than 60% for uterine fibroids; decreased by more than 80% for uterine adenomatosis. Symptoms of abdominal pain, frequent urination, difficult urination, menorrhagia, and hemorrhage caused by large tumors also decreased significantly.

Professor Nguyen Viet Tien said that if open surgery or laparoscopic surgery is used to treat fibroids, the uterus must be incised, and the uterine muscles will also be weakened after removing the tumor. US-HIFU technique is a non-invasive surgery (no scalpel used) to treat tumors, effective in treating uterine fibroids, endometriosis, cesarean scar pregnancy, breast tumors, etc., ensuring reproductive function.

US-HIFU operates based on the principle of using the system's probe to convert electrical energy into sound energy, converting sound energy into heat energy, using the penetrating and converging properties of ultrasound waves to directly focus on target tissues (tumors) in the body. The temperature in the biological convergence area will immediately increase to 100 degrees Celsius, causing the target tissue (at the tumor) to become irreversibly necrotic, disrupting the blood supply to the pathogenic cells. The tumor will self-destruct over time. The process of treating tumors with US-HIFU does not require deep anesthesia. Patients can be discharged after 1 day. This is a new technique, transferred by Thien An Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital (Hanoi), licensed by the Ministry of Health .
