Overcome difficulties and become rich
Mr. Ho Trong Lap (59 years old, in Vinh Quang 2 village, Phuoc Son commune, Tuy Phuoc district, Binh Dinh) is a typical farmer who has overcome difficulties and become rich right on his homeland, thanks to the model of raising tiger shrimp, intercropping with crabs and various types of fish.

According to Mr. Lap, before, his family only farmed a few acres of rice fields and raised pigs. The couple had 3 children, but his wife was seriously ill, so life was always short of money. Since switching to aquaculture, the economy has improved and they have enough to eat and save.
Mr. Lap said that in 1995, he borrowed money to bid for 1 hectare of water surface in Thi Nai lagoon for aquaculture, but it was ineffective due to lack of experience. However, he did not give up but researched and studied through books and newspapers, attended training courses, and visited many models...
Thanks to that, he accumulated a lot of experience, from how to handle alum, check pH, how to create algae to help shrimp, crabs, and fish grow quickly... to how to choose good breeds.

In 2014, Mr. Lap boldly rented 4 hectares of water surface to expand the model in the direction of improved extensive farming. He released the seeds in many batches and selectively harvested, so there was almost always shrimp, crab, and fish to sell.
"Compared to industrial farming, improved extensive farming yields less, but has high economic value and is environmentally friendly. Thanks to this model, my wife and I have a comfortable life, can feed 3 people, and go to university," said Mr. Lap.
Every year, his family harvests 3-5 tons of shrimp, 2-3 tons of various types of fish and more than 2 tons of crab. From 2018 to now, the average revenue is about 1.5 billion VND, after deducting expenses, he earns a net profit of about half a billion VND per year. This model also creates seasonal jobs for 10 local workers with an income of 4-5 million VND/month.
Learn from Uncle Ho's teachings
Mr. Lap shared that Uncle Ho once taught: "Nothing is difficult, only fear of not being steadfast". So I think everyone needs to nurture the spirit of daring to think, daring to do, being diligent, and not giving up in the face of difficulties.
"Regardless of the job, you must be passionate, have a spirit of learning and progress to gain knowledge, then apply it to production and business to improve efficiency," said Mr. Lap.

To have an ideal farming environment, he had to renovate the pond, dredge the bottom, add lime to increase alkalinity and nutrition; comply with disease prevention measures; use some methods to color the water, creating a natural food source for shrimp, crabs, and fish to grow.
"This model is very effective. If shrimp farming fails, crabs and fish will come back. In particular, the quality of shrimp, crabs and fish raised in this way is very delicious and is favored by the market," said Mr. Lap.
As the Deputy Head of the Vinh Quang 2 Farmers' Association, over the years, Mr. Lap has supported many families to successfully build effective aquaculture models.

In addition, Mr. Lap also helped 10 poor farming households in the commune borrow capital, the amount of 150 million VND without interest to develop the economy, including 7 poor and near-poor households to escape poverty sustainably; actively supported charity work and education promotion in the locality with the amount of over 30 million VND...
Chairwoman of Phuoc Son Commune Farmers' Association Nguyen Thi My Nhung said that not only is Mr. Lap's family a typical farmer, he also lives responsibly towards the community; actively participates in local patriotic emulation movements, helping people develop the economy and get rich.
In 2022, farmer Ho Trong Lap was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Prime Minister for having an effective and stable production model, helping many farmers to reduce poverty and create jobs for many workers, contributing to the socio-economic development in Binh Dinh province.
Mr. Lap was also awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Provincial People's Committee in 2019; the title of excellent farmer and businessman at the provincial level for the period 2012-2016...
