Having failed her favorite major, Linh Giang retook the exam and graduated with honors from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology after three years without having to retake any subjects.
Many teachers and friends were surprised when Linh Giang finished the program early, graduating with honors with a grade point average (GPA) of 8.37/10. The school said that out of more than 3,000 students graduating in November, only a few achieved similar results.
But for Giang, this was the goal set as soon as he entered the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics.
With strengths in natural sciences and a passion for learning new technology, in 2019, Nguyen Thi Linh Giang registered for the Electronics and Telecommunications major, Faculty of Electrical and Electronics, University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University. However, this major has a benchmark score of 24, Giang was 0.2 points short. The female student was disappointed because she was very close to the finish line, the gap was only equal to one multiple choice question.
Giang then chose to study Mechanical Engineering at school, but soon realized it was not suitable for him so he decided to retake the exam the following year.
"When I received the admission results, I was thinking about how I could study harder to graduate with my peers," Giang said.

First, the female student planned to register for each semester and set a goal of not failing any subjects so as not to waste time retaking them. In the two main semesters, Giang maintained 15-17 credits. In the summer semester, she registered for an additional 5-8 credits. Thanks to a year of studying Mechanical Engineering, Giang was able to transfer some general subjects without having to retake them.
Many people worry that girls studying at Polytechnic will have a hard time because they are surrounded by boys and the subject is dry and heavy, but Giang feels the opposite. According to her, the environment has few girls so she receives enthusiastic support from teachers and male friends.
Giang also always tries to study at home, discuss homework and study in groups with her friends. When she encounters a difficult problem or doesn't understand something, she asks her teachers or friends until she understands it. Giang believes that if she leaves it until the final exam, she will panic because she won't be able to review it in time or remember the content.
The female student also acknowledged that pressure is inevitable when studying ahead, because in a short time she has to absorb more knowledge than usual. Giang has almost no time for herself or her family, but devotes herself entirely to studying, especially before each final exam.
"Every day I always think of the three words 'a little more', encouraging myself that any difficulty can be overcome, as long as I persevere," Giang shared, saying that 2023 is the year with the most intense study and work intensity.
At the beginning of the year, Giang completed her major subjects and did an internship at FPT Telecom. In the summer, Giang officially accepted an IT job at a bank. The female student also raced to complete her graduation project and review English for the TOEIC 4 skills test.
According to Giang, an indispensable specialty when studying at Polytechnic is racing against deadlines all year round. Before the first project defense, Giang's project simulation had an error.
"That was a heart-stopping and sleepless night. Luckily, I was able to calmly find a way to fix the error and achieve good results on the reporting day. This is also something that Bách khoa taught me: you have to be truly brave and have an iron spirit to overcome unexpected obstacles and challenges," Giang said.
Dr. Vo Que Son, lecturer of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics, who supervised the graduation project, said that although he was exempted from some general subjects, Giang was still a rare case in the faculty to graduate early with honors, without failing any subjects. According to him, the program of the Polytechnic is heavy and difficult, so students graduating on time is already a success.
"This is the first time I have encountered a case like Giang's. You are very proactive and organize your work well. Whenever you meet your supervisor, Giang presents what you will do, how difficult it is, and what solutions there are," Dr. Son shared.
Giang's graduation project topic was also commented as very practical and applicable when choosing to research new technologies to increase the efficiency of network system processing. Realizing Giang's research ability, Dr. Son advised the female student to seek research opportunities and study for a master's degree.
Giang received a two-month exchange scholarship to study Computer Science at Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. The 22-year-old sees this as a preparation for seeking a master's scholarship abroad.
"Bach Khoa has given me memorable years. Unfortunately, I don't have much time to participate in student playgrounds and academic competitions because I spend all my time studying," Giang shared.
