Al Aila is a journalist, producer and researcher who has been covering Israel's offensive on the besieged enclave since October. Her husband, Roshdi Sarraj, was killed in the ongoing war, forcing her to take over the Ain Media company he co-founded.
Much of her reporting focuses on the devastating impact of Israel's bombing of the Gaza Strip on the population, including displacement, living conditions, and efforts to try to escape the deadly attacks.

On October 22, Al Aila was about to sit down to breakfast with her family at home when shrapnel from an Israeli missile strike on a nearby home killed her husband and injured their infant daughter.
Since the war in Gaza began, the challenges facing the media organization have been exacerbated as team members have been killed, attacked and have struggled amid a lack of resources in the region.
Al Aila was chosen for this award because her honest story reflects the courage and dedication of many other Palestinian journalists in this devastated and extremely dangerous land.
According to CPJ, preliminary investigations show that at least 116 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since last October, making it the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began collecting data in 1992.
