Meritorious Artist Dai My was born in 1962, from Thanh Hoa. As a child, he had to study and work as a construction worker and harvest rice to help his family and loved to sing red music and reformed opera.
While in 7th grade, Dai My heard that the Vietnam Tuong Theater was recruiting actors, so he immediately registered. When he arrived for the audition, he was asked to sing a Tuong song, which surprised Dai My because he did not know what Tuong was. At that time, Dai My sang a familiar song he heard on the radio: "I sing a song praising the rice plant...", then when the teachers asked him to sing a few sample Tuong tunes, My imitated and unexpectedly passed the audition.
