Before the sun rose, the gardens in Cau Den village (Thanh Hai commune, Luc Ngan district) were filled with people calling each other to go up the hill to harvest lychees in time to get to the market.
Farmers in Cau Den village have to wake up to harvest lychees from dawn.
Explaining why she has to wake up at midnight to harvest lychees, Ms. Ha Thi Loan, a resident of Cau Den, said: "During lychee season, we have to sleep from 9 to 10 pm the night before, then wake up at 2 am to pick lychees and sell them. Traders buy lychees early, by 6 to 7 am they have almost enough goods. If we bring them in late, the price will decrease."
According to garden owners, this year's weather is hot and sunny, with drought in many places, but it has not affected the lychee. Most gardeners have had a good harvest with consistent quality. The most beautiful lychees are bundled into bunches of about 3 - 4 kg and then put into baskets of 200 - 300 kg, then transported to large purchasing points such as Chu Town, Kim Town...
On average, a gardener in Cau Den village harvests 3-4 quintals of lychee per day, and several tons of lychee are harvested during the whole crop. Lychee season in Luc Ngan starts at the end of May and lasts for more than a month.
Mr. Hao, one of the residents of Cau Den village, has more than 4 hectares of lychee, and is one of the largest gardeners in the area. These days, in addition to his family, he has to hire 3 more workers to harvest. On the night we took these photos, his family picked 900 kg of lychee. To harvest such a large amount of lychee, the hired workers also have to wake up at dawn to join the owner in picking the fruit, stripping leaves, cutting stems... and receive a salary of up to 1 million VND per day.
Mr. Ngo Van Mao, a resident of Cau Den, lights a lamp to harvest lychees. With more than 200 lychee trees over 10 years old, his family expects to harvest about 2 tons of fruit in this year's lychee season.
Mr. Mao said that this year's lychee has good quality, beautiful skin, eye-catching colors, and not many fruits are burnt.
Luc Ngan has 3 types of lychee, of which lychee is harvested last. Lychee has thin skin, rough thorns, small seeds, thick flesh and is sweeter than other types.
Mr. Phan, a resident of Cau Den, is busy bundling lychees. "My family has about 100 trees, and we expect to harvest 2-3 tons of lychees this year," said Mr. Phan.
This year, Luc Ngan litchi crop is good, making farmers excited.
Workers in Mr. Hao's lychee garden work from night until dawn.
Ms. Ha Thi Loan, from Thanh Hoa, was hired to harvest lychee with a salary of 1 million/day.
"The job is not difficult, but having to work at odd hours is a bit tiring. There are many nights when I can't sleep because I'm not at home," said Loan.
At around 4am, the lychees are brought to the market for sale. This is the first trip of the day for Mr. Tuan's family. Every day, he carries 2 trips, each trip carrying 300kg of lychees to the market.
At the beginning of the season, good lychees are purchased by traders at 13,000 - 18,000 VND/kg, even 25,000 VND/kg. The price of lychees will gradually decrease towards the end of the season, only from 6,000 - 10,000 VND/kg.
