Bac Giang litchi crop failed, but price was good

Lychee sellers are excited and enthusiastic.

In recent years, according to Mr. Trong, Luc Ngan litchis have been sold at stable prices. To facilitate consumption, Luc Ngan district usually has 3 working groups.

One delegation worked with Dau Giay and Long Thanh wholesale markets (Dong Nai province), Thu Duc wholesale market (HCMC). The second delegation worked with the Dong Dang - Lang Son border gate economic zone management board (Lang Son). The third delegation worked with the Lao Cai province economic zone management board.

In May 2024, the border gate area in Lao Cai will export 50-65 containers with 1,200-1,500 tons of lychee every day.

The leader of Luc Ngan District People's Committee said that Luc Ngan litchi has 3 seasons. The first season is U litchi, early ripening litchi from late April to early May. Next is Thanh Ha litchi - a type of litchi favored by the Chinese market, with high prices due to its thick flesh, bright red ripe color, and favorable preservation for export. After that comes the main litchi season.

In the early-ripening lychee and Thanh Ha lychee crop, the output reaches 50-70% compared to the previous year, while the main-season lychee only reaches over 50,000 tons (every year from 100,000-150,000 tons).

"Although the lychee output is low this year, the promotion work is good and the consumption is very favorable. Regarding the selling price of lychee in the final stage, if we want to buy lychee tomorrow, when we go to the garden to make an appointment with the farmers, they say I agree to sell but I will calculate the price tomorrow.

The price can be 70,000-80,000-90,000 VND, even 130,000-140,000 VND/kg at the end of the season. In highland areas like Tan Son, there is a traffic jam for about a week. People selling lychees are excited, traders compete with each other," said Mr. Trong.

Speaking more about lychee, Mr. Mai Son - Standing Vice Chairman of Bac Giang Provincial People's Committee - quoted experts saying that lychee output decreased partly due to unusual weather, causing low fruit set rate.

However, there are still well-cared gardens with technical solutions, the price of lychee is 3-5 times higher than every year.

"This is a lesson for lychee districts and the agricultural sector in statistics, forecasting, and recommendations for other crops," he noted.

The leaders of the People's Committee of Bac Giang province requested the agricultural sector and localities in the province to pay attention to market forecasting and clarify the causes of the decrease in lychee output to have solutions to limit the impact.

The "fear of responsibility" mentality is not only among cadres.

At the conference, the leaders of Bac Giang province asked delegates, departments, and reporters to pay attention to the phrases "fear of mistakes" and "fear of responsibility". According to Mr. Son, fear of mistakes is the consciousness of doing the right thing and doing everything well. Fear of responsibility is something that should be criticized and blamed, not only among cadres but also in businesses.

For example, when inviting a valuation unit, if the materials and equipment are not yet available on the market, a valuation that is too low may lead to the investigation agency determining the risk of asset loss.

Mr. Son added that he strongly supports the press in giving comments and feedback so that officials can make corrections and authorities can step in to criticize and clarify.

However, the reflection must be accurate, avoiding affecting the psychology of the staff because of the thin line between being proactive and creative in things that are not regulated by law and intentionally violating regulations.

According to the report of the People's Committee of Bac Giang province, in the first 6 months of 2024, the province's economic growth (GRDP) reached 14.14%, ranking first in the country. Total import-export turnover reached 23.9 billion USD, up 21.3% over the same period in 2023. Total budget revenue is estimated at over 9,800 billion VND, up 28.3% over the same period and equal to 61.2% of the estimate.
