Recognizing the role of biodiversity in protecting the ecological environment, in recent times, the Quang Tri Provincial Forest Protection Department has implemented many solutions to prevent illegal hunting, trading, transporting and using of wild animals, in conjunction with efforts to conserve and develop biodiversity resources.

With a forest area of over 248,189 hectares, Quang Tri is one of the regions assessed to have high biodiversity. The flora and fauna are rich with over 2,600 species, including many endemic, endangered and rare species such as white-crested pheasant, saola, gaur, large-antlered muntjac, striped rabbit, black bear, Hatinh langur, brown-shanked douc langur; pine needles, slipper orchids, agarwood...
However, Quang Tri is also facing biodiversity degradation, many rare and precious wild animals and plants are in danger and have significantly decreased in number. One of the main reasons is the profit from illegal hunting, trading, transporting and consuming of wildlife products.
Faced with that situation, to combat and prevent violations of the law and crimes in the field of wildlife management and protection, especially rare animals listed in the Vietnam Red Book, the Forest Protection Department has coordinated with relevant agencies and local authorities to actively propagate and raise awareness among people not to hunt, consume, transport and illegally trade wildlife; and sign a commitment with restaurants and eateries not to consume wildlife.
For breeding facilities, it is required to have a license registration according to regulations. For forest owners, the management boards of protective and special-use forests are required to enhance their role and responsibility in managing and protecting assigned forests; effectively implement sustainable forest management plans; strengthen basic surveys on biodiversity to understand and develop conservation plans; systematize and standardize patrolling and monitoring activities on biodiversity and changes in forest resources. Detect and handle violations promptly, in accordance with regulations and strictly in order to enhance education and deterrence against criminals.
Up to now, the province has established 3 nature reserves (NRs) including: Dakrong NR, Bac Huong Hoa NR, Con Co marine island NR; 2 landscape protection forests including: Legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail Landscape Protection Area and Ru Linh Landscape Protection Area; 1 biodiversity corridor connecting Dakrong NR and Bac Huong Hoa NR, to maintain and develop biodiversity resources in general and protect endemic, endangered and rare species of flora and fauna in particular.
In the province, there are 42 wildlife breeding facilities with 14 species/4,595 individuals, of which 25 facilities breed endangered, precious, and rare wildlife with 8 species/1,593 individuals; 17 facilities breed common wildlife with 6 species/3,002 individuals. Since the beginning of the year, codes for endangered, precious, and rare wild animal breeding facilities have been granted to 3 facilities; 2 decisions have been issued to cancel the code granting decisions of 2 facilities.
The units under the department have completed the documents to release 4 wild animals, with a total weight of 42.5 kg, into the natural environment. Received and handed over 1 pangolin weighing 0.12 kg to the Center for Rescue, Conservation and Development of Creatures - Cuc Phuong National Park.
In addition, the Provincial VFBC Project Management Board, in coordination with the Biodiversity Conservation Component of the Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Conservation Project (VFBC) funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is implementing synchronous activities from livelihood development, capacity building in biodiversity management and monitoring, application of technology in forest patrolling and protection as well as increasing community participation in field conservation activities, establishing community-based forest patrolling and trap removal teams; at the same time, communicating to raise awareness about biodiversity conservation and reducing demand for wildlife consumption...
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in charge of the Forest Protection Sub-Department Phan Van Phuoc affirmed that with the implementation of many synchronous solutions in advising, issuing directive documents, propagating and disseminating laws on the protection of wild animals, and at the same time strengthening patrolling, checking, dismantling, confiscating and destroying tools used for illegal hunting and trapping of wild animals... so that wild animals in the province are better managed and protected. Wild animal breeding activities are monitored in accordance with regulations and create favorable conditions for breeding facilities in breeding and economic development.
These are practical and specific solutions to improve the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation and nature protection towards sustainable resource development, serving the socio-economic development strategy and environmental protection of the province in particular and the country in general.
