One weekend, professional military Major Tran Thi Ha, staff of the Propaganda Department, Political Department, President of the Women's Union of the Quang Tri Provincial Military Command, and other women in the unit visited the Quang Tri Center for Nursing Homes and Social Protection.
The two boys Ho Van Vang and Truong Huu Thanh suddenly ran out to their mothers. They said “Hello mom” and hugged their godmothers to satisfy their longing.
Mother and child love is nurtured every day
Ms. Tran Thi Ha shared: “Unlike the beginning when the Women's Association of the Quang Tri Province Military Command came to visit and sponsor and raise the two children, the children were still afraid and hesitant to approach us.
But with time, the mother's love and care for her children, the children naturally accepted the mothers who did not give birth to them, but were always willing to help them grow up every day.
In addition to providing material support, whenever we have time or spend weekends, we often go to the center to meet, guide and take care of our godchildren in their daily activities and studies. Thus, the mother-child relationship is nurtured every day."

Little Truong Huu Thanh is one of two godchildren adopted by mother Tran Thi Ha in her personal capacity. She said: “I am a mother, and I work for the Women's Union, so my heart is sympathetic whenever I learn of another orphan. I have two biological children, and within my family's financial capacity, I adopted two more godchildren so that I can take better care of them myself.”
Gently adjusting Thanh's collar, Ms. Tran Thi Ha said with emotion: "Thanh is so pitiful, he was abandoned at the hospital when he was born.
After that, the child was adopted by a family, but after a few years, neighbors discovered that the child had been brutally abused by his adoptive parents. When the authorities came to rescue him, his body was covered with old and new wounds, imprinted on his skinny, black body.
Being taken to the Quang Tri Center for Nursing and Social Protection for Meritorious People, Thanh was still scared, panicked and afraid of strangers.
My sisters and I went to visit my child. I couldn't hold back my tears. I could only hold my child in my arms and comfort her. Then I decided to become her godmother to make up for it and warm her heart, which was too wounded.
After many visits to the center to visit Thanh and to give love to the orphan boy, at some point, Thanh started calling out "mom" to Ms. Tran Thi Ha.
She said: “At that time, I was very happy to hear my son report on his studies and daily activities. Even when leaving the center to buy books or go to a friend’s birthday party, Thanh texted or called his foster mother to ask for permission before leaving.
During holidays or summer breaks, I take Thanh to my house to play for a few days with my two children, then the whole family goes out to have breakfast, drink coffee, and go shopping together.
The family meals were simple but warm with the affection that Ha’s husband and children gave to their “godson” as if they were their own flesh and blood. Thanh also lived and slept in the same bed with Ha’s biological son, and the siblings’ affection for each other grew stronger and stronger.
Wishing you a bright future
In addition to the boy Truong Huu Thanh, Ms. Tran Thi Ha also adopted a second godson, Tran Van Nam Khanh (born 2006), in Dong Luong ward, Dong Ha city.
Khanh's parents divorced when he was young. His father remarried, the family was poor, and Khanh's mother disappeared for more than ten years. Khanh and his siblings lived with their grandparents.
Despite difficult circumstances, Khanh was an excellent student for many years. However, Khanh's dream of continuing his studies seemed to have come to an end when his grandparents were no longer able to work due to poor health.
Taking over Khanh's sponsorship from May 2023 until Khanh finishes university, Ms. Ha said: "I provide Khanh with all the tuition, monthly extra classes, books, clothes, etc. about 2 million VND/month.
I hope that my family will be the best motivation and support for Khanh to continue studying with peace of mind and take control of his future."
Among the children sponsored by the Women's Union of the Quang Tri Provincial Military Command, Ms. Tran Thi Ha and her sisters always show love to little girl Ho Thi Sao, a student at the A Vao Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, Dakrong District.
Ms. Tran Thi Ha said: "We met Ho Thi Sao, a 7th grade student at A Vao Primary and Secondary School, Dakrong District, on the occasion of the unit implementing the program "Accompanying women in the border areas".
The house of Sao's mother and six children was shabby and empty. Sao's five sisters had been orphaned for several years, and her mother was sick and weak, so they grew up like grass, with some hungry meals and some full meals, thanks to the care of neighbors and teachers.
Despite her family’s difficult circumstances, her teachers and friends all admired her academic achievements. Looking at the certificates of merit for excellent students hanging on the walls of Ho Thi Sao’s dilapidated house, the mothers of the Women’s Association of the Quang Tri Province Military Command all agreed to sponsor her, with 4 million VND/year, until Ho Thi Sao turned 18.
According to Ms. Tran Thi Ha, in order to have a long-term fund to care for and raise the sponsored children, all staff and members deduct their daily salary to contribute to taking care of the children.
In addition, the Women's Union also saves and exploits food sources to increase production of agencies and units, and calls on organizations and individuals inside and outside the province to join hands to contribute more money to support 17 sponsored children every month.
The female major shared: "To provide our children with a bright future, there are certainly many difficulties, but with the hearts of mothers, we always devote all our love to taking care of our children."
