Malaysia holds ASEAN chairmanship 2025

Early elections in Germany
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on December 27, 2024 dissolved the lower house of parliament to pave the way for early elections on February 23, 2025 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz's three-party coalition collapsed, according to Reuters.
Parties have launched their election campaigns, with polls suggesting Friedrich Merz, leader of the centre-right CDU, is likely to replace Scholz, of the Social Democrats (SPD).

However, the CDU remains vague about what weapons it will send to Kyiv, while the SPD opposes sending long-range missiles because "Germany and NATO should not become belligerents themselves," according to AFP.
World Expo in Japan
Japan will host the third World Expo in the event's 170-year history in 2025, which is expected to attract more than 20 million visitors from around the world, according to Kyodo News.
The exhibition is scheduled to take place from April 13, 2025 to October 13, 2025 on an artificial island in Osaka City. The Japanese government and the private sector, as well as a total of 161 countries and regions, are among those planning to host the exhibition at the pavilions.

The G20 presidency will culminate in a G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, in November 2025. The summit will adopt a declaration reflecting the common position of the G20 countries and the joint actions they will take to address the world's most important challenges, according to Ramaphosa.
“The G20 presidency is a valuable opportunity for South Africa to advance efforts towards greater global economic growth and sustainable development,” Mr Ramaphosa stressed.
President Ramaphosa added that more than 130 meetings will be held in South Africa during the year it holds the G20 presidency. "Tens of thousands of people from nearly 30 countries and representatives from more than 20 regional and international organisations will come to South Africa during our G20 presidency," Ramaphosa predicted.
