The security camera surveillance officers at Noi Bai International Airport are like silent "gatekeepers", contributing to ensuring absolute security and safety for all flight activities, bringing peace of mind to every passenger.

Having worked for 10 years, Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong, a security camera surveillance team member of the Mobile Security Team, Noi Bai Airport Security Center, is admired by his colleagues for his "quick hands and sharp eyes" in finding many lost items of passengers.

“Each shift lasts 4 hours, each employee has to observe 100-200 cameras depending on the location.

Therefore, to do this job well, we must undergo professional training and master the skills of using and operating equipment.

In particular, we must clearly remember the camera locations in each area for convenience in monitoring and quick retrieval. Just think, the entire airport is equipped with more than 1,000 cameras while the camera surveillance team only has 26 officers and employees, so how are we required to remember them?", Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong said with a smile.

Not only requiring memory of each camera installation location, security surveillance staff must also have analytical thinking, reasoning, predicting possible situations, and from there come up with appropriate solutions.

A representative of Noi Bai airport said that a modern camera system with more than 1,000 "magic eyes" has helped Noi Bai International Airport supervisors observe all activities at the airport.

“From security checks, baggage monitoring, to monitoring people moving around, detecting suspicious behavior… everything is recorded and processed promptly. This job requires high concentration, a sense of responsibility and the ability to handle situations quickly,” said a representative of Noi Bai airport.

According to statistics, in 2024, Noi Bai airport security forces discovered and directly handed over 383 passengers who left their belongings at the airport. Also in 2024, this force coordinated with relevant units to track down 108 cases of "mistakenly taking" passengers' belongings. Of these, 82 cases were discovered right at the security checkpoint screening passengers and carry-on luggage; 9 other cases in restricted areas and 17 cases in public areas of the passenger terminal.

It is known that, in addition to monitoring the cameras, the on-duty team also acts as a "call center operator" to answer questions via the hotline of Noi Bai Aviation Security Center. Every day, they receive countless calls from passengers with all kinds of requests such as asking about security procedures, flight information, or asking for help finding lost luggage...

10 minutes to find Rolex watch worth half a billion dong

As the person searching for a Rolex watch worth half a billion VND that was lost at the airport, Nguyen Manh Cuong still remembers the moment of overwhelming joy when he found it.

The incident happened on September 25, 2024, a female passenger picking up a relative panicked and reported that she had lost a Rolex watch worth 500 million.

This woman said that when she opened the car door and got off at Terminal 1, the watch she was wearing also flew out. She searched everywhere but couldn't find it, so she asked for help from security staff.

Immediately, the information was transferred to the security camera team. At this time, Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong and Nguyen Hoang Anh were on duty.

Mr. Cuong said that at first the search seemed unsuccessful because the surveillance camera did not detect any abnormalities in the area where the car was parked.

“We hypothesized whether the watch fell to the first floor or not? Expanding the scope, Mr. Cuong predicted that the watch might have fallen through the small ditch separating the traffic lane from the railing from the second floor to the first floor.

I continued to look at another camera on the first floor to find it and saw a black dot appear under the traffic on the first floor. Comparing the time the passenger got off the bus and the time the black dot appeared, I found it matched," Mr. Cuong recounted.

Mobile security personnel immediately arrived at the scene and discovered the watch there. “We were even happier than the owner. After completing the procedures, the half-billion-dong watch was returned. The entire process from receiving the news to discovering the watch only took about 10 minutes with the combined search effort,” said Mr. Cuong.

Previously in 2023, an employee at the foreign currency exchange counter at Noi Bai T2 Passenger Terminal was also assisted by Noi Bai airport security staff to retrieve 43 million VND that a customer mistakenly took onto the plane. Through the camera system, it was determined that the passenger had taken the money by mistake. The security force coordinated with the border police and the airline to request the passenger to return it before the flight took off to Russia.

During the last days of the year, Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong and his colleagues are busier than ever as the number of passengers arriving at the airport reaches hundreds of thousands per day. To avoid forgetting things at the airport, Mr. Cuong recommends that passengers always keep an eye on their belongings.

“Passengers should remember or take pictures of their belongings so that if they are lost, they can provide them to airline staff for quick search assistance. They should also remember their location or travel route, and the time they were lost,” said Mr. Cuong.
