Maintaining consistent solutions to combat IUU fishing

On the afternoon of April 17, speaking at a meeting to listen to a report on the situation of overcoming the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Tran Chi Cuong requested that agencies, units and localities must regularly and resolutely maintain solutions to develop a sustainable fisheries economy.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment researches and has solutions to effectively manage fishing vessels that do not meet the conditions for fishing activities, to prevent the emergence of "3 no" fishing vessels (no registration, no inspection, no license); urgently complete before May 25, 2025 the issuance of all documents for fishing vessels as well as fully update data into the fishing vessel management software.

In addition, promote propaganda work, raise awareness in society; proactively grasp the situation, promptly detect early, from a distance, prevent fishing vessels and fishermen from deliberately operating without full documents as prescribed, fishing vessels illegally operating in foreign waters. The Department supports human resources together with localities to grant fishing licenses to fishing vessels with a maximum length of 6m to less than 12m to exploit aquatic resources in coastal areas.

The City Border Guard Command has increased close monitoring of fishing vessels that do not meet the conditions for fishing activities; and strictly handled cases of intentional violations. The city leaders also requested agencies, units, and localities to review and update complete and guaranteed data; and to clarify the specific content of the violations so that timely solutions can be found. According to statistics, up to now, there are 58 fishing vessels in the area that do not meet the conditions for fishing activities.

The city has created a monitoring list and assigned local People's Committees to strengthen management and supervision of fishing vessels, regularly update the status of operations, ensure timely provision of information and require fishing vessel owners not to take fishing vessels into fishing activities without sufficient documents and not to leave fishing gear and equipment on board.
