Reasons why Ho Chi Minh City should increase Tet holidays for students

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên05/12/2024

Students in Ho Chi Minh City are expected to have only 9 days off for the 2025 Lunar New Year, which many parents, students and teachers think is too little. In my personal opinion, as a teacher in Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City leaders should increase the number of days off for students.

Why should Ho Chi Minh City leaders increase Tet holidays for students?

I would like to give some reasons. According to document No. 3089/QD-UBND, issued on August 8, 2024, regulating the time frame for the 2024-2025 school year, preschool, primary, secondary and high school students will have Tet holiday from January 25, 2025 (ie December 26th of the lunar calendar) to February 2, 2025 (ie January 5th of the lunar calendar). Thus, including weekends before and after the prescribed time, students in Ho Chi Minh City will have a total of 9 days off, 7 days less than last year. And this is also the shortest Tet holiday for students in Ho Chi Minh City in recent years.

Compared to other localities in the country, the 9-day Tet holiday for students in Ho Chi Minh City is quite short. For example, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Tay Ninh, Tra Vinh provinces all have 14 days off; Quang Ninh province has 13 days, Kon Tum province has 17 days...

Students in Ho Chi Minh City only have 9 days off for Tet. With such a short break as mentioned above, it will lead to many disadvantages for teachers and students in resting, celebrating Tet, and enjoying spring. Because of the characteristics of Ho Chi Minh City, teachers and students are very diverse, including a large number of teachers and students from far away provinces, so it is necessary to have more time to travel, visit hometowns, wish each other a happy new year...

A female math teacher in Tan Phu district, Ho Chi Minh City expressed her concern: "My hometown is in the Central region, I go back to my hometown every year to celebrate Tet, but this year I will probably have to postpone my plan because I don't have much time off and it's very hectic to travel. I think Ho Chi Minh City should give teachers and students a longer Tet holiday, because of the local characteristics...".

Although the school year plan framework has been issued since the beginning of the school year, many teachers still believe that the leaders of Ho Chi Minh City can flexibly adjust and change it. Because in reality, there is still time reserved for the school year plan, and this the school can flexibly use to ensure a full teaching program.

Some localities often encounter natural disasters and floods, so the Ministry of Education and Training has included backup weeks in its plan. Ho Chi Minh City is less affected by these factors, so the use of school year time is more flexible. Therefore, if Ho Chi Minh City increases the Tet holiday, there is no fear of not having enough time to make up for the program's progress.

At the same time, according to the policy of the Ho Chi Minh City education sector for many years, general schools must always proactively combine online teaching (online teaching on digital technology platforms) with direct teaching in class. Therefore, if the Ho Chi Minh City leaders increase the Lunar New Year holiday for students, schools will proactively and flexibly combine online teaching without fear of missing lessons.

On the afternoon of December 5, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that it had submitted a document to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee requesting permission to change the 2025 Tet holiday schedule to suit and ensure the implementation of the school year plan. In recent days, parents, teachers, and students in Ho Chi Minh City have complained that "9 days of Tet holiday in Ho Chi Minh City is too little."

"From many perspectives: parents, teachers, and citizens of Ho Chi Minh City, I want students to have more days off for Tet."

That is the opinion of a teacher working in Tan Phu district, Ho Chi Minh City. This teacher said that he also supports Thanh Nien Newspaper's proposal to reduce summer vacation days so that students in Ho Chi Minh City can have more Tet holidays.

On the afternoon of December 5, speaking with Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter, Mr. Do Dinh Dao, Principal of Nguyen Huu Tho High School, District 4, Ho Chi Minh City, said that in his personal opinion, he really hopes that students in Ho Chi Minh City will have more days off for Tet, at least students can start going to school on the 10th day of the first lunar month (instead of the 6th day of the first lunar month according to the announced Tet holiday schedule). Or students can have Tet holiday from the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month, so that they can return to their hometowns to visit their ancestors' graves, understand the customs and practices of their people; wrap Chung and Tet cakes with their grandparents, buy peach and apricot flowers, to live in an atmosphere that only happens once a year.

"As educators, we always aim for the best values for our students, teaching them good things and the beauty of our traditions and national culture. In particular, the traditional Tet holiday is an ideal occasion, only once a year, for students to live in that atmosphere. In my opinion, if we let students have Tet holiday too late, or go to school a few sessions early, they will not be able to absorb much knowledge, not to mention that going to school in such a mood is also not effective," said teacher Do Dinh Dao.

At the same time, according to Mr. Dao, it is not necessary to start the spring - go back to school on Monday, we can be flexible, start the school year in the middle of the week, so that students can have a few more days off for Tet. "Tet holiday is also a meaningful time with family, for students to learn and experience local cultural knowledge, things that they may have read in books but have not seen, heard, or experienced. Tet in childhood and student life will always be the most memorable time in everyone's life, after that time will never come back", said the Principal of Nguyen Huu Tho High School.
