Hanoi University of Science and Technology Thinking Assessment (TSA)

In 2025, the TSA exam is expected to be held in 3 sessions on weekends, each session will have 3-4 test teams at 30 test sites. The exam can accommodate about 75,000 test takers, specific information for each session is as follows:

Round 1: Exam date 18-19/1/2025, registration opening date 1-6/12/2024

Round 2: Exam date 8-9/3/2025, registration opening date 1-6/2/2025

Round 3: Exam date 26-27/4/2025, registration opening date 1-6/4/2025

Regarding the exam structure, Hanoi University of Science and Technology kept it stable as last year, with three parts: Mathematical Thinking (60 minutes), Reading Comprehension (30 minutes) and Scientific Thinking/Problem Solving (60 minutes). These are three independent exam parts, the questions focus on assessing the thinking ability of the candidates, not directly testing the knowledge of any subject.

The TSA test is a computer-based test, and the results are valid for 2 years for university admission purposes (depending on the school). Currently, about 40 universities use the TSA test results for admission, including many top universities such as: National Economics University, Hanoi University of Pharmacy, Academy of Finance, University of Commerce, etc.

Hanoi National University Aptitude Test (HSA)

According to information from Hanoi National University, the HSA exam in 2025 will consist of 6 sessions, starting from March, with an expected number of 85,000 candidates. Regarding the location, the exam will take place in many provinces and cities such as Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh, Da Nang... The exam locations for each session will be announced later.

The HSA exam structure in 2025 consists of three parts, of which two are compulsory: Mathematics and Data Processing, Literature - Language, similar to the present.

The Mathematics and Data Processing section consists of 50 questions, lasting 75 minutes. The content is in the fields of algebra, analysis, geometry and measurement, statistics and probability. The Literature - Language section consists of 50 multiple choice questions, which candidates will complete in 60 minutes. The questions use materials related to many areas of life such as literature, language, culture, society, history, geography, art, etc.

In addition, candidates have the choice of Science or English. For the Science section, candidates choose 3 out of 5 topics: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History and Geography. Each topic has 17 questions. The English section consists of 50 multiple choice questions, designed for admission to foreign language training programs.

This is one of the largest private exams in the country. About 90 universities use this exam for admission.

Ho Chi Minh City National University Aptitude Test (V-ACT)

This is the largest exam in the country, with nearly 107,000 candidates participating last year. More than 100 schools use this result for admission. In 2025, Ho Chi Minh City National University will continue to organize the exam with two sessions scheduled on March 30 and June 1 in 25 provinces/cities.

Previously, on November 12, Ho Chi Minh City National University issued the structure and sample of the competency assessment test from 2025. The competency assessment test from 2025 still includes 120 objective multiple-choice questions with 150 minutes of testing and is conducted on paper. The test results are determined by modern testing methods according to the question response theory.

According to the Center for Testing and Training Quality Assessment of Ho Chi Minh City National University, the structure and content of the 2025 competency assessment test have many similarities with international standardized tests such as SAT (USA), PET (Israel) or GAT (Thailand). The test aims to assess students' overall competency, helping universities and colleges recruit suitable candidates.

College Admission Test (V-SAT)

This is the first computer-based entrance exam held in 2023, organized by 4 universities: Ho Chi Minh City Banking University, University of Finance - Marketing, Saigon University and Ho Chi Minh City Open University in collaboration with the National Center for Testing and Education Quality Assessment, Ministry of Education and Training. To date, the exam has been used by 18 schools for admission, with an expected enrollment target of about 10-40%.

The V-SAT exam organizes 7 independent subjects, including: Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, History, Geography. Depending on the purpose of using the exam results, candidates can register to take from 1 to 7 subjects. The test format is objective multiple choice for each independent subject on the computer. From 2025, the V-SAT exam will have an additional Literature subject with a combined format of objective multiple choice and essay writing on the computer.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Education Aptitude Test

In 2025, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education plans to organize many competency assessment exams in Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Da Nang, and Gia Lai. The exam will include 6 independent tests: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Literature, and English. In particular, the Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology exams will consist of 40 questions, divided into three parts, instead of 50 questions with two parts as before.

For Literature, the test consists of 22 questions in three parts: reading comprehension (multiple choice); writing a short paragraph; essay. The writing a short paragraph is new content compared to previous years. For English, the test structure remains the same, including four parts: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The materials are taken from many different fields. The test content will closely follow the 2018 general education program, in which the knowledge of grade 12 accounts for about 70-80%, the rest is knowledge of grades 10 and 11.

The Ho Chi Minh City University of Education's competency assessment exam was first held in 2022 with about 2,000 candidates. This year, this number has increased to more than 8,000. The exam results are used for admission by many pedagogical schools, including: Hanoi Pedagogical University, Hanoi Pedagogical University 2, pedagogical schools under Thai Nguyen University, Hue University, Da Nang University and Vinh University.

Hanoi National University of Education said it will continue to organize independent exams to assess capacity in 2025. Accordingly, candidates choose to register for a number of exams in the following subjects: Math, Literature, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography and use the exam results to register for admission to regular university training programs according to the requirements of each university. Candidates take the exam directly on paper.

It is expected that in the fourth quarter of 2024, Hanoi National University of Education will review and edit the structure and exam matrix to match the goals, requirements and core content of the 2018 General Education Program. At the same time, the process of adding new questions will be implemented to update the source question set for the 2025 competency assessment exam, moving towards building a large enough standardized question bank in the following years.

According to the announcement of Hanoi National University of Education 2, in 2025, in addition to continuing to consider admission based on the results of the competency assessment exam of Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi National University of Education and the specialized assessment exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University of Education, the school will organize its own entrance exam for admission.

The school representative said that the school is in the process of developing and finalizing a plan to organize this exam. It will be a competency-based exam, expected to be held 1-2 times a year, taking place in May or June.

Military schools

From 2025, the Ministry of National Defense will organize a separate assessment exam to use the results of the admission to military schools. Candidates will take the exam on a computer. The exam will include comprehensive knowledge of Math, Literature, English, and a combination of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. Candidates will use the exam results to apply to military schools and academies with a quota of about 30% of the total enrollment quota.

In addition, police schools also organize specialized competency assessment exams and use the results of these exams for admission consideration. The competency assessment exam of the Ministry of Public Security includes both multiple-choice and essay sections. The multiple-choice section, in addition to the subject content, also tests logical thinking, judgment skills, and situation handling, in conjunction with the specific training requirements of the police industry. The essay section tests knowledge of two subjects: Mathematics and Literature.
