Erase the distance

Talking about the changes in his hometown over the past few decades, Mr. Nguyen Thua Su, nearly 70 years old, in Bui Xa village, Nhan Quyen commune (Binh Giang)'s eyes sparkled with joy. He said: "It's hard to imagine, it's truly a miraculous change."

Nearly 40 years ago, when Mr. Su had just returned to his hometown after being discharged from the army, the village roads and the roads to the fields were still muddy, the inter-provincial road from Binh Giang to Hung Yen was small, many sections were still paved with gravel. People mainly traveled on foot, bicycles, or rickshaws.

In the early 90s of the last century, motorbikes were still an extremely valuable asset, even more valuable than a house. Yet now, motorbikes, scooters, and electric motorbikes are very popular, and many families in Mr. Su's village have bought cars. Village and communal roads are paved with asphalt, concrete, and equipped with lights for nighttime lighting. Inner-field roads are also concreted, with trucks parked at the edge of the banks during the rice and vegetable harvest season.

Recalling the event of the opening of the intersection connecting the Hanoi - Hai Phong Expressway with Provincial Road 392 in Nhan Quyen Commune in February 2024, Mr. Su was very happy. With this intersection, traveling from Binh Giang to Hanoi only takes a few dozen minutes, the road is smooth. Just a few years ago, that was still a dream.

It has been nearly 15 years since the Hop Thanh Bridge (Thanh Ha) across the Gua River opened to traffic, but the memory of the bridge's inauguration day is still intact in the mind of Mr. Nguyen Van Hien in Thanh Quang commune.

Previously, Ha Dong area was often compared to an island because it was surrounded by rivers, making travel extremely difficult. All connections and trade depended on ferries. Waiting for the ferry was very frustrating, and on stormy days, the ferry stopped operating, making everything far away. “We always wished for a bridge across the Gua River to facilitate travel. In 2010, when Hop Thanh Bridge was inaugurated, everyone was happy and joyful,” Mr. Hien recalled.

The joy multiplied for the people of Ha Dong communes when the province invested in the implementation of the provincial road 390 project from Hop Thanh bridge to Thanh Quang bridge. This project includes the construction of a new 7m wide bridge parallel to the old Hop Thanh bridge to meet the increasing traffic demand, attract investment, and develop the economy in the province's early lychee growing area.

The same is true for Kinh Mon. Mr. Doan Duc Minh, Chairman of the Kinh Mon Town Veterans Association, said that Kinh Mon used to be likened to an “oasis” because it was surrounded by a dense river system. To get to Kinh Mon, the only way was by ferry. In 1999, An Thai bridge across Kinh Mon river was built, creating favorable conditions for Kinh Mon to trade as well as develop the economy, culture and society. After that, Da Vach bridge, then Hiep Thuong bridge, later May bridge, Trieu bridge erased the distance between the town’s areas and neighboring areas.

Synchronous, interconnected

On May 2, 2024, the first freight train at Cao Xa station (Cam Giang) to participate in the international transit route officially departed. This event marks the development of the railway industry in Hai Duong, opening up opportunities for businesses in the province and neighboring provinces and cities to transport to all provinces and cities nationwide, especially promoting import and export with foreign markets such as China, Eastern European countries, etc.

With the goal of striving to develop synchronous transport infrastructure in three areas: roads, railways and inland waterways, many large projects are about to be implemented in Hai Duong, opening up many expectations.

Regarding railways, the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong railway, a national key transport project, is being accelerated by the Ministry of Transport to start construction in 2025. The project's goal is to connect with Hai Phong international seaport, connecting with China to meet the demand for high-quality, fast, convenient and safe transport. The railway is more than 400 km long, passing through 9 provinces and cities, with a design speed of 160 km/h, of which the section through Hai Duong is about 41.5 km long.

Regarding waterways, we must mention the Ninh Giang Inland Waterway Port project, covering an area of over 27 hectares in the communes of Hong Phuc and Kien Quoc (Ninh Giang) with a total investment of nearly 1,500 billion VND. Or the Logistics Service Center Project, Petroleum and Cargo Port, Petroleum Depot, Commercial Service Area covering an area of nearly 35 hectares in Minh Hoa Commune (Kinh Mon) with The total investment cost is over 1,400 billion VND. When these inland ports come into operation, they will become traffic, logistics and multimodal transport hubs to serve the needs of transporting, loading, storing and distributing goods in the region.

Many bridges and roads connecting Hai Duong with neighboring provinces and cities are also preparing to be inaugurated, are under construction or are about to start construction.

Mr. Vu Duc Hanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Transport of Hai Duong province, said that the traffic routes connecting districts, connecting neighboring provinces including Thai Binh, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang and the national transport network; transport logistics links between road, waterway and rail transport modes have been clearly planned in the Provincial Planning. These orientations are the basis for proposing and implementing important key transport investment projects for the period 2021-2025 and after 2025.

Transportation is considered the lifeblood of the economy. Synchronized and interconnected transportation projects are "Phu Dong's footsteps" connecting trade, opening up new development space for Hai Duong to break through and grow stronger.

Within 3 years from 2021 to 2024, many road traffic projects connecting Hai Duong with other provinces and cities have been implemented. These are the project to build Dong Viet bridge and the access road connecting Yen Dung district (Bac Giang) with Chi Linh city. The project to build Kenh Vang bridge and the access road connecting Gia Binh and Luong Tai districts (Bac Ninh) and Nam Sach district. The project to invest in building Hai Hung bridge and the access road connecting the East-West axis of Hai Duong province with Phu Cu district (Hung Yen).

Hai Duong also cooperated with Hai Phong city to invest in building a route connecting National Highway 17B with Dinh Bridge, Kinh Mon town with a length of 3 km; a route connecting National Highway 17B (Hai Duong province) with Provincial Road 352 (Hai Phong) from National Highway 17B to Kinh Thay River, Kinh Mon town with a length of 7 km.

By the end of 2024, Hai Duong will have completed more than 10 intra-provincial traffic projects such as the East-West axis road of Hai Duong province, the North-South axis road of Thanh Mien district; Ring Road I of Hai Duong city...
