According to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper, currently, in Chau Thanh district (Tien Giang province), specialized vegetable growing areas have been formed, suitable for the soil conditions of each area. Leafy vegetable and spice growing areas (gotu kola, coriander, basil, fish mint, om vegetable...) are concentrated in communes such as Tam Hiep, Tan Ly Dong, Than Cuu Nghia, Thanh Phu, Long Hung, Nhi Binh. And mixed fruit vegetable growing areas (cucumber, bitter melon, squash, pumpkin, tomato...) are concentrated in communes such as Tan Ly Dong, Tan Hoi Dong, Tan Huong, Than Cuu Nghia...
Mr. Do Van Hau - residing in Than Cuu Nghia commune, Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province - said that he is growing coriander on an area of over 15,000 m2. Traders buy each kg of coriander for 6,000 VND. With this price, the vegetable grower has a profit of about 30% after deducting expenses.
According to Mr. Hau, growing and caring for coriander is quite easy and light. The initial investment and costs during the crop season are not much. The time to harvest coriander for the first time as well as the following times is also about 2.5 months. Compared to the previous rice farming profession, coriander brings in 3 times more income.
Mr. Tran Van Nam - residing in Than Cuu Nghia commune, Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province - said that in early 2020, after seeing some households in the village growing coriander effectively, he tried planting a few rows in his home garden. After a while, he saw that it was easy to grow and quite profitable, so he expanded the planting area.
According to Mr. Nam, his 15,000m2 coriander area is currently in the harvest stage. After harvesting, taking care of fertilizer for about 2.5 months, the next harvest will be done.
“In addition to growing coriander, people in Than Cuu Nghia commune also grow pennywort. This vegetable is also easy to care for. When it grows well, weeds cannot grow, so we only need to fertilize a little. I have grown medicine for many years and rarely need to use it, so the profit is also higher,” said Mr. Nam.
Mr. Tran Van Nam also added that thanks to vegetable growing, the lives of people in this land are better, they have spacious houses, full amenities, and their children can study well.
To save on production costs, Mr. Nam also used an area of 500 square meters near his house to grow coriander seeds. “To ensure production, I had previously planted seedlings to serve production on a large area. Thereby, I can proactively have seedlings, save on production costs, and increase profits for my family,” said Mr. Nam.
