The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), stopped at 99.58 - up 0.25 points compared to April 16, 2025.

The dollar continued to decline, with both safe-haven and risk-sensitive currencies outperforming the greenback as traders waited to see whether the Trump administration would reach new trade deals with its partners.

The US dollar fell sharply last week on concerns about the economic impact of new tariffs, and as investors shifted capital allocations overseas due to uncertainty over the erratic implementation of trade tariffs.

U.S. retail sales surged in March as households ramped up auto purchases in anticipation of tariffs, U.S. data showed. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell is scheduled to speak later today.

The euro rose 0.77% on the day to $1.1368, still below a three-year high of $1.1473 hit last Friday.

The dollar weakened 0.53% to 142.47 Japanese yen, having earlier touched 142.03, slipping slightly below last Friday's low to hit its lowest exchange rate since September 30.

Mr. Bechtel noted that trading volumes are tapering off ahead of the Good Friday holiday, when most U.S. markets will be closed although the foreign exchange market remains open.

The dollar fell 1.03% against the Swiss franc to 0.815, just above a 10-year low hit last Friday.

The franc has risen the most among G10 currencies since the tariff announcement on April 2, and the resulting deflationary impact could prompt the Swiss National Bank (SNB) to take interest rates back into negative territory.

Sterling was largely unaffected by the lower-than-expected inflation data and rose 0.27% to $1.3267, after hitting a six-month high of $1.3292 earlier.

The Australian and New Zealand dollars, which posted their biggest weekly gains since 2020 last week, eased slightly from recent peaks but remained higher on the day, with the Australian dollar up 0.43% to $0.6369 and the New Zealand dollar up 0.15% to $0.5907.
