Many people in Hanoi have chickenpox

The Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC) recorded 27 cases of chickenpox in the city last week, including a cluster of 10 cases at Phuc Tan Primary School, Hoan Kiem District.

This cluster of cases makes Hoan Kiem district the locality with the most chickenpox patients in Hanoi at present, followed by Me Linh with 5 cases.

Thus, from the beginning of 2024 until now, the city has recorded 147 cases of chickenpox, a decrease of more than 50% compared to the same period last year. The CDC warns that the current changing weather often causes many infectious diseases such as measles, chickenpox, hand, foot and mouth disease, whooping cough, etc. It is forecasted that more cases and outbreaks may be recorded in the coming time.

Chickenpox is a contagious disease, especially dangerous for people with underlying endocrine diseases (prone to complications), pregnant women (can cause fetal malformations)... Last week, the Central Endocrinology Hospital received many cases of chickenpox with underlying diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, adrenal insufficiency... with severe complications.

A typical case is a 64-year-old female patient from Nam Dinh who had chickenpox and pneumonia with underlying type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. A week before being hospitalized, the patient had contact with two students with chickenpox, and then had a high fever of 38-39 degrees Celsius, with blisters appearing in the mouth and throat and scattered all over the body. She bought her own fever-reducing medicine but it did not improve, she coughed a lot, many blisters on her skin burst, became red, inflamed, and had pus, and she had difficulty urinating and felt pain.

On March 12, Master, Doctor Pham Hong Quang, in charge of the Department of Tropical Diseases, said that the patient was very tired, dehydrated, and had toxic infection syndrome. The patient was given electrolytes, intravenous antibiotics specifically to prevent secondary infections, and the antiviral drug Acyclovir, while controlling blood sugar, blood pressure, and accompanying symptoms... Currently, after 4 days of active treatment, the patient is awake, blood sugar is well controlled, and the blisters are gradually decreasing.

Doctor Quang said that most chickenpox patients with underlying endocrine diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, adrenal insufficiency... are hospitalized with very high blood sugar, electrolyte imbalance, requiring electrolyte replacement, and blood sugar control with injections, although previously the patient only needed to take blood sugar pills to control well.

Chickenpox is transmitted through the respiratory tract, often causing clusters of cases, small, scattered outbreaks and is mostly benign. "However, people with chronic diseases, low resistance such as diabetes, kidney failure, adrenal insufficiency... with chickenpox are susceptible to complications such as skin and soft tissue infections, pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, making the disease progress severely," said Dr. Quang.

The Department of Tropical Diseases is also treating many patients with endocrine disorders who are suffering from other infectious diseases such as influenza A, covid-19, tuberculosis, dengue fever, rickettsial fever..., which are severe or at risk of becoming severe. The treatment process for these patients is very difficult and complicated.

Doctor Quang recommends that people with infectious diseases should be isolated and avoid crowded places such as schools, workplaces, etc. to limit transmission to the community. In particular, people with endocrine diseases should not be subjective when infected with acute diseases such as influenza A, B, Covid-19, dengue fever, chickenpox, etc. because treatment is very difficult and can cause acute complications that are life-threatening. Absolutely do not self-treat at home to avoid serious disease progression.
