Seasonal flu on the rise in many parts of the world

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/02/2025

On the afternoon of February 5, the Ministry of Health informed about the outbreak of seasonal flu in Japan.

According to the announcement of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases of Japan, from September 2, 2024 to January 26, 2025, Japan recorded about 9.5 million cases of seasonal flu. The cities of Tokyo, Hokkaido, Osaka and Fukuoka are densely populated areas with many tourist attractions and are the most affected areas of the current seasonal flu outbreak. The current seasonal flu outbreak in Japan is mainly caused by influenza A, but there is still a risk of an outbreak caused by influenza B.

To prevent flu and winter-spring epidemics, the Ministry of Health recommends wearing masks in crowded places, maintaining personal hygiene and getting vaccinated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also said that according to the results of global influenza surveillance, seasonal influenza is increasing in many European countries (all subtypes of influenza viruses appear), North America (mainly influenza A), Central America and the Caribbean (mainly influenza A/H3N2), West Africa (mainly influenza B), North Africa (mainly influenza A/H3N2), East Africa (mainly influenza B) and many countries in Asia (mainly influenza A/H1N1 pdm09), consistent with the typical trend for the end of the year.

The Ministry of Health continues to monitor and closely follow the developments of the epidemic situation in the country and around the world to direct and guide localities and units to deploy appropriate and timely measures and provide complete and accurate information, not to cause panic, but not to be subjective in the face of developments of the epidemic situation.

On the same day, the Drug Administration of Vietnam (Ministry of Health) said that according to a quick report from vaccination units, the demand for influenza vaccination has increased slightly in recent days. Currently, Vietnam has 4 importers and manufacturers that ensure the supply of this vaccine for vaccination needs. A representative of the VNVC Vaccination System also confirmed that the VNVC national vaccination system maintains consultation and safe vaccination indications, ensures adequate supply of influenza vaccines in the face of increasing vaccination demand and does not increase vaccine prices.

Speaking to Thanh Nien , a representative of the Drug Administration Department said: "Safe vaccination to proactively prevent disease is necessary and is recommended by health agencies. On the management agency's side, along with ensuring vaccine supply, we also monitor and manage vaccine prices, not allowing unreasonable price increases."

According to information from a number of leading infectious disease treatment units, cases of severe pneumonia and respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation due to influenza infection, with secondary infections, have been recorded. Because the influenza virus directly affects the lungs, patients with pre-existing lung damage are more likely to develop severe symptoms than healthy people. There are cases where respiratory failure worsens very quickly in just 2-3 days. Therefore, people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and underlying diseases need to get vaccinated against influenza every year and follow personal protective measures.
