The information was released after the CIO failed to execute the arrest warrant and had to turn to the police, while the police said the request was legally problematic. "After an internal legal review, we found that the CIO's official letter about executing the warrant caused a legal dispute," said Baek Dong-heum, a senior police official in charge of investigating the Yoon ban b case.

South Korean president's security chief refuses to comply with arrest warrant

A police official said the force would consider arresting any members of the Presidential Security Service if they obstructed the arrest again. The CIO suspended its arrest warrant for Yoon on January 3, after hours of confrontation with the presidential security team. Meanwhile, groups supporting and opposing the arrest continued to protest on January 6. Yoon’s legal team filed a complaint on January 6 against CIO chief Oh Dong-woon and 10 others over the attempt to arrest the president last week, according to The Korea Times.

Information about North Korea's missile launch is broadcast at a train station in Seoul on January 6.

Amid political turmoil in South Korea, North Korea on January 6 launched a suspected hypersonic missile into the East Sea, its first launch this year. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) detected the launch of a suspected intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) at around 12:00 (local time) from the Pyongyang area and flew about 1,100 km before falling into the sea. A JCS official said the missile was similar to IRBMs equipped with hypersonic warheads launched in January and April last year.

Kyodo news agency quoted Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru as instructing officials to quickly provide information to the public, ensure the safety of aircraft and ships in the area and prepare for unexpected situations. Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said Tokyo had protested to Pyongyang over the missile launch.

The launch took place while US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited South Korea. According to Yonhap, Mr. Blinken accused Russia of being ready to provide advanced space and satellite technology to North Korea in exchange for weapons and other equipment. Russia did not immediately comment on the statement. In addition, Mr. Blinken said that the close relationship between North Korea and Russia increased the need for security cooperation between the US, South Korea and Japan, as well as with NATO, as security in the Indo-Pacific region became increasingly interconnected.
