National Highway 9 from Dong Ha City to Lao Bao International Border Gate (Huong Hoa District) is about 80 km long. Every day, thousands of vehicles travel on this route. However, National Highway 9 currently has some shortcomings in traffic infrastructure, such as: narrow, winding roads; many sections and points of the road surface are peeling, broken and at high risk of landslides when the rainy season comes.

In late September, the traffic volume on National Highway 9 was very high, including heavy trucks, container trucks carrying agricultural products, coal, etc., causing many sections of the road surface to peel and sink. In particular, after heavy rains, National Highway 9 had many landslides on the positive and negative slopes, dragging a large amount of soil and rock down onto the road surface and the banks of the Thach Han River.

Many sections on National Highway 9 are at high risk of landslides.

According to the report of Road Management Area II, due to the impact of tropical depressions, storms causing heavy rain over a large area have caused landslides in many places, directly affecting road traffic and works on the route.

In particular, at the negative slope collapse point at km 50+560 of National Highway 9 (section through Dakrong district), with a crack and subsidence of about 65 m, the landslide has eaten into nearly half of the road surface, posing a high risk of road breakage, causing traffic congestion.

In response to the subsidence incident at the above section, the Vietnam Road Administration has agreed to assign the Road Management Area II to carry out an emergency repair project for the landslide at km 50+560 of National Highway 9. Uong Bi Construction Investment Joint Stock Company is the winning bidder with a winning bid price of nearly 3.2 billion VND, and the project implementation period is 120 days.

The leader of Quang Tri Road Management and Construction Joint Stock Company said that currently on National Highway 9, there are 4 sections and points (through Dakrong district) at risk of landslides on the positive slope, such as: from km 44+200 - km 44+250, from km 46+505 - km 46+512, from km 51+430 - km 51+455, from km 53+900 - km 53+966. In addition, there are nearly 10 sections and points of the road surface where flooding and traffic jams often occur due to landslides on the positive slope.

With the current situation, the risk of landslides on National Highway 9 threatens safety and traffic infrastructure as Quang Tri enters the rainy season. Therefore, the authorities need to soon have a plan to repair and upgrade National Highway 9 to ensure traffic safety along the entire route.
