Publishing house founded by two Vietnamese women receives the 2024 German Publishing House of Excellence Award

The German-Vietnamese bilingual publishing house HORAMI, founded by two women of Vietnamese origin, has just received the award for Outstanding German Publisher of the Year 2024, presented by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The award ceremony is part of the Frankfurt Book Fair 2024 taking place in Germany. The 2024 Outstanding Publisher Award is presented to publishers with important achievements and great contributions to the diversity of German literature. HORAMI was honored along with 83 other publishers. This is the first time a publisher founded and run by Vietnamese people has been awarded this award. Founded in 2014 by two Vietnamese women, Hanh Nguyen-Schwanke and Thai Bao Tram, HORAMI is the first publisher to bring bilingual German-Vietnamese literary works to the Vietnamese community in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In addition to her expertise in auditing and finance with more than 20 years of experience working in multinational corporations, Hanh Nguyen-Schwanke is also the author of children's books such as the first Vietnamese-German-English picture book dictionary called Meine kleine Welt - The world around me. She is the co-author of the German-Vietnamese bilingual Children's Health Handbook . Thai Bao Tram is the co-founder of the Vietnamese Entrepreneurship Network in Europe, supporting young people of Vietnamese origin who want to start a business in Europe. After graduating from university, she was invited to work for the Ministry of Economics, Energy and Enterprise of Berlin in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Over the past 10 years, this publisher has strived to amplify the voices of Asian immigrants in Europe. HORAMI has published nearly 20 German and German-Vietnamese bilingual children's books, bringing valuable spiritual food to nearly 1,000 Vietnamese families each year in German-speaking countries in Europe. In November, HORAMI will launch the German-Vietnamese bilingual work Whose conical hat? Wem gehört der Reishut? by author Dao Trung Uyen and artist Vu Thuy Ngoc Ha. Dao Trung Uyen is the author of about 40 children's books published in Vietnam and Germany. She has won a number of awards for writing for children. Artist Vu Thuy Ngoc Ha won first prize at the prestigious Scholastic 2019 picture book award. She works with many major publishers at home and abroad. In addition to the 2024 German Publisher of the Year Award, the work Wünsche (original: Wishes) published by HORAMI was also nominated for the 2024 Youth Literature Award in Germany. The award announcement ceremony took place at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2024 on the evening of October 18 (German time).
