Currently, in Binh Thuan, there are two popular types of dragon fruit: white-fleshed dragon fruit and red-fleshed dragon fruit. Of these, white-fleshed dragon fruit accounts for the larger quantity. The off-season period lasts from October to March of the following year.
During this off-season, gardeners apply lighting techniques and care to make dragon fruit bear fruit as desired.
Like Ms. Be's red-fleshed dragon fruit farm of more than 10 hectares in Hong Son commune, Ham Thuan Bac district, Binh Thuan, it is divided into many areas. Of which, at this time, the dragon fruit mostly bears green fruit and is cared for according to the correct process.
In recent months, the weather in Binh Thuan has been hot and sunny, along with erratic storms, which has affected the care of dragon fruit.
Therefore, it requires the caretaker to have the techniques as well as experience in the stages of lighting, fruit setting, etc. Mr. Nguyen Minh Quoc, the manager of this dragon fruit farm and also the person who knows the techniques of growing dragon fruit, shared that the weather in the area is hot and sunny, so it needs a lot of water to irrigate the dragon fruit trees, and the lighting technique for red-fleshed dragon fruit is the same as for white-fleshed dragon fruit.
“This season is rainy, windy, sunny and has geckos, which are harmful to the fruit, so I have to regularly check the garden to find a solution,” Mr. Quoc added.
Normally, in the off-season, dragon fruit is sold at a higher price than in the season because of the smaller quantity. Therefore, Binh Thuan dragon fruit growers expect the price of dragon fruit to be as expected when harvested.
Binh Thuan is known as one of the regions with the largest dragon fruit production in the country, with an area of nearly 30,000 hectares. In addition to domestic consumption, Binh Thuan dragon fruit is officially exported and cross-border to many countries.
