White House denies US interference in Russian election

VnExpressVnExpress12/03/2024

The White House said the information that Washington sought to interfere in the election in Russia was "completely false" and made counter-accusations against Moscow.

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said on March 11 that the US is planning to interfere in the country's presidential election, including efforts to reduce voter turnout and attack online voting systems. The SVR has not provided any evidence.

A spokesman for the US National Security Council said on March 12 that "these allegations are completely false." "The United States has not and will not interfere in Russian elections," the person said. "Russia has long targeted elections in the United States and other countries. Russia should stop this behavior instead of spreading misinformation."

This is not the first time Russia has accused the West of planning to interfere in elections. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on March 4 that "Western diplomatic missions in Russia are building a mechanism to interfere in elections through projects supporting the opposition." Russia warned that such efforts "will be viewed as an act of aggression."

Russia is scheduled to hold presidential elections on March 15-17. Candidates include incumbent President Vladimir Putin, who is running as an independent, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia Leonid Slutsky, MP Vladislav Davankov and MP Nikolay Kharitonov. This is Mr. Putin's fifth presidential bid.

The United States will hold a presidential election in November. With a resounding victory on Super Tuesday, US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are almost certain to become the Democratic and Republican candidates, repeating the 2020 race for the White House.
