Overcoming challenges
February 28, 2010 marked an important milestone for the bauxite mining and alumina production industry in Vietnam when the Nhan Co Alumina Factory Project officially started construction.
Over 15 years of formation and development, the project has made an important contribution to the socio-economic development of Dak Nong province as well as the aluminum industry of the whole country.
From the very beginning, the project encountered many difficulties, especially the red mud dam collapse in Hungary, leading to concerns about environmental safety. In addition, the project also faced distorted and divisive information from hostile forces.
Faced with these challenges, the Government and relevant agencies had to re-evaluate the environmental impact, economic, defense, and socio-cultural efficiency of the project before continuing with implementation.
According to the plan, the project would be completed after 3 years from the start date, but in reality it took until 2016 to officially complete and put into trial operation. From July 1, 2017, the project officially went into commercial operation, with a total investment of 16,821 billion VND.
Since then, the project has achieved many remarkable achievements. In particular, the project has made an important contribution to the local budget, with an annual revenue of more than 400 billion VND. At the same time, it has created jobs for more than 1,100 workers, mainly local people, with an average income of over 15 million VND/month.
The project also contributes to promoting the shift of economic structure from agriculture to industry and developing service and supporting industries.
Over the years, the project has implemented many social security programs with a total support value of up to 195 billion VND. Social security activities are mainly carried out such as: building schools, medical stations, roads, housing for ethnic minorities, as well as contributing to charity funds and supporting educational programs.
It is expected that in 2025, Dak Nong Aluminum Company - TKV will support Dak Nong with 2 billion VND to build 20 charity houses. Each house will be supported with 100 million VND.
Towards new paths
Despite many achievements, the project still faces some difficulties. In particular, site clearance and resettlement work still have many problems.
Land reclamation and land use after exploitation need appropriate policies to ensure sustainable development. Security, order and state management issues need more attention to maintain long-term stability.
Faced with that reality, Dak Nong province and the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV) have proposed that the Government and central ministries and branches have a special mechanism for land use after mining.
At the same time, it is allowed to account for resettlement costs in production costs to preserve state capital, as well as have a reasonable land rent deduction policy to ensure the interests of localities and businesses.
The 15-year journey of the Nhan Co Alumina Factory Project deeply demonstrates the determination and efforts to overcome difficulties and move towards sustainable development.
The positive results of the project will also be the clearest evidence to report to the Party, Government and People about the initial success of the factory.
With the achievements, the project not only contributes to bringing Dak Nong province closer to the goal of becoming an industrial center for bauxite - alumina - aluminum mining by 2030, but also opens up important turning points for Vietnam's aluminum industry.
With the attention of the Government, functional agencies and the consensus of enterprises, the project is expected to continue to develop strongly, contributing more to the socio-economic development of Dak Nong in particular and the country in general.
In 2024 alone, the converted alumina production output of Dak Nong Aluminum Company - TKV achieved 692,500 tons, equal to 106.5% of the plan; profit reached 112 billion VND, reaching 373% of the plan. In 2025, Dak Nong Aluminum Company - TKV aims to produce over 650,000 tons of alumina.
