Professor Geoffrey E. Hinton, a British-Canadian cognitive psychologist and computer scientist, is widely recognized for his pioneering research on artificial intelligence (AI). Born on December 6, 1947 in Wimbledon, London, Professor Geoffrey E. Hinton is a descendant of logician George Boole, who laid the foundations for the theory of digital circuit design. One of the Professor's most notable predictions is that AI will soon be able to understand and produce natural language at a level not inferior to humans. This prediction is based on the rapid progress of machine learning and reinforcement learning algorithms. Another area of ​​Professor Geoffrey E. Hinton's research is unsupervised learning, a type of machine learning in which algorithms learn from unlabeled data. Most current AI systems are based on supervised learning, in which algorithms are trained on a large set of labeled data. However, Professor Geoffrey E. Hinton believes that unsupervised learning is the key to AI more closely mimicking the way humans learn. He is developing new algorithms for unsupervised learning, aiming to create AI systems that can learn from the environment like a child. Professor Geoffrey E. Hinton and four scientists: Yoshua Bengio, Jen-Hsun Huang, Yann LeCun and Fei-Fei Li have been awarded the 2024 VinFuture Grand Prize worth $3 million (over 76 billion VND) for their groundbreaking contributions to advancing the advancement of deep learning. Their research has opened a breakthrough era for technological innovations, thanks to which machines can "learn" from huge amounts of data and achieve incredible accuracy in tasks such as image recognition, natural language processing and decision making. The 2024 VinFuture Grand Prize recognizes Professor Geoffrey E. Hinton for his leadership and foundational work on neural network architecture. His 1986 paper with David Rumelhart and Ronald Williams demonstrated distributed representations in neural networks trained by the backpropagation algorithm.
