Directly performing surgery on player Nguyen Van Son after his injury in Thailand on the evening of January 5, Professor, Dr. Tran Trung Dung said that with this surgery, we see it as the trust of patients, especially those who have the financial means to pay, in Vietnamese healthcare. "That choice affirms everyone's belief in our medicine. With Son's surgery, I believe that other doctors like Viet Duc, Cho Ray... can all perform this technique at a high level. The important thing is belief, because if we don't believe, high technology will go abroad," Professor, Dr. Tran Trung Dung expressed.

Difficulties lie ahead

According to Professor Tran Trung Dung, Son's surgery is not technically difficult but requires an experienced doctor. Because for normal patients, after surgery, they may only need to walk and do daily activities, but for athletes, especially high-level athletes like Xuan Son, it is completely different. Therefore, the post-operative recovery requirements are a huge challenge. After the bone heals, muscle strength and weight control must also be maintained.

"Son's physique, a European physique, is very easy to gain weight. If he just reduces his exercise a little, he can easily gain more than a hundred kilos from 90 kilos. Therefore, Son's surgery is only about 1/10 of the way done, with many difficulties ahead. In order for Son to maintain and control his weight, he needs to practice rehabilitation, and must practice appropriately for each stage: bones not yet healed, bones not yet firmly healed, and firmly healed," Dr. Dung analyzed.

According to doctors, 1 day after surgery, Son is now doing rehabilitation exercises with a machine and in bed. He can also move around with crutches.

"Fortunately, before the surgery, the consultations and quick preparations helped Son to have surgery within the golden hour, within 24 hours of the injury. If the intervention was delayed, the swelling due to the injury would increase, the skin on the leg would blister, and after surgery, it would heal poorly and be poorly nourished. Surgery within the first 24 hours when the swelling was not much, so the bone fixation would be favorable. If everything goes well, Son could return to competition in about 9 months," Professor Dung shared.
