The play is grand, has a faster pace, more colorful costumes, and has a few additional short segments to explain the story more clearly. Overall, this version has less of a period drama than the old version, but is closer to the times, very real, suitable for a new audience.
The injustice and the "extermination of three clans" case of the mandarin Nguyen Trai and the rite scholar Nguyen Thi Lo will forever be a painful mark in history, and also a lesson of blood and experience for those who rule the country. It is necessary to mention it again and again. The play integrates history, theater, literature, fine arts, music, dance, and costumes at a high level, and deserves to be widely disseminated to the audience.
To stage this version, Director Huynh Anh Tuan of Idecaf stage organized for the artists to go to the North, to visit ancient relics such as Con Son, Le Chi garden, the imperial citadel, temples... to understand the costumes, motifs, sculptures, or stories told by the people, to have more empathy when designing or playing the role. Therefore, the audience will be interested to see the characters wearing hats exactly as recorded in the historical records of the Later Le period, such as the king wearing a xung thien hat, the concubine Nguyen Thi Anh wearing a phoenix light hat, the concubine Ngoc Dao wearing a crown, Nguyen Trai wearing an o sa hat, the eunuchs wearing a dinh tu hat, the mandarins in the court wearing cao son hats... The screen and the door of the royal palace placed on the stage also have motifs of the Later Le period.
