Causes of two freight train derailments in Thua Thien Hue

On October 4, according to a source from Giao thong Newspaper, Vietnam Railways Corporation has analyzed the results of two derailments of locomotive D19E-943 in train H16 at Km 752+250 Lang Co - Thua Luu section and locomotive D18E-603 at Km 752+290 Thua Luu - Lang Co section (Phu Loc district, Thua Thien Hue province) on September 28.

Accordingly, the cause of the two locomotive derailments mentioned above was that the construction unit (Binh Tri Thien Railway Joint Stock Company) did not construct the track according to the prescribed technical standards; the super-elevation design exceeded the basic standards. Accordingly, the connecting accessories between the basic rail (P50 rail) and the anti-derailment rail (reused old P43) were incorrect, the gap between the anti-derailment rail was larger than specified, and the top surface of the anti-derailment rail compared to the top surface of the basic rail was lower than specified (the anti-derailment rail was ineffective), leading to the wheels still climbing on the rails causing derailment.

Vietnam Railways Corporation requests Binh Tri Thien Railway Joint Stock Company to organize analysis, seriously handle the responsibilities of relevant collectives and individuals, and report the handling results according to regulations.

In addition, Binh Tri Thien Railway Joint Stock Company and related units strictly implemented the direction of the leaders of Vietnam Railway Corporation at the meeting to inspect railway traffic safety in the Thua Luu - Lang Co area and to improve the work of ensuring train safety through small-radius curves in consecutive opposite directions.

Previously, Giao Thong Newspaper reported that over the past 2 months, the North-South railway section through Phu Loc district, Thua Thien Hue province has had 6 consecutive train derailments, including 4 train car derailments, and on September 28 alone, 2 locomotive derailments occurred.

Vietnam Railway Corporation and related units have organized a working group to survey and find out the cause to prevent it. The working group carefully inspected and evaluated all factors from the road, carriages, equipment on the track... to prevent derailment.
