Multiple sexual partners increase the risk of sexually transmitted diseases

Patients in this study were sexually active men, aged 16-60, with a complete history of sexual habits and history of sexually transmitted diseases.

Cases with symptoms of urethral syndrome (painful urination, frequent urination, burning sensation in the urethra, urethral discharge) will be asked specifically about sexual partners, time of last intercourse, time of symptoms.

The above study conducted by a group of doctors from Military Hospital 175, Hanoi Medical University, Hanoi Medical University Hospital showed that, in the group of patients studied, the average age of first sexual intercourse was 21.5; the average number of stable sexual partners was 2.91 people; the rate of STDs was 9.95%.

More sex partners, more risk of STDs

Married patients had an average number of stable sexual partners of 3; in the unmarried group, the average number of stable sexual partners was 2.75.

Patients who had unsafe sex (sex with prostitutes or one-time partners) had a higher rate of STDs than the other group.

According to a member of the research team: "Our results show that in the study, up to 49.3% of unmarried men had STDs, while this number in the married group was 36.5%."

"In addition, we also found that the number of stable sexual partners in the group of patients with STDs was 3 partners, higher than the group of subjects without STDs, which was 2 partners," the research team said.

For men, each additional sexual partner increases the risk of contracting an STD by 6%.

Having sex with an unstable partner and having more than one sexual partner are risk factors for STDs.

Patients who had sex with an unstable partner had a 2.1 times higher risk of STD infection than those who did not have sex with an unstable partner.

Regarding the number of sexual partners in men, MSc. - Dr. Nguyen The Luong, General Secretary of the Vietnam Association of Sexology, said that in the above study, the average number of sexual partners was 2.9 people/man, which would be higher than the number of partners of the majority of men in the community because the men in the study were patients who went to see a urologist, often with medical conditions.

In practice, andrologists recommend safe sex and monogamy to reduce the risk of STDs in both men and women.
