Woman insists on being discharged from hospital because her "assets" are only worth over a hundred thousand

The lonely woman with the unfortunate fate mentioned above is Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Anh (born in 1967, temporarily residing in lane 119 Giap Bat, Hanoi).

Ms. Anh has regained consciousness after a life-saving colon resection surgery. Lying motionless on the hospital bed in the Oncology Department, Thanh Nhan Hospital, the unfortunate woman moved her dry, cracked lips, as if she wanted to say something but…, couldn’t.

Trying to turn over but failing, Ms. Anh grimaced in extreme pain. The rare tears that had just crawled out from her two deep eye sockets quickly melted away on her wrinkled, haggard face.

Talking about this patient with special circumstances, Ms. Bui Thi Hong, Head of Social Work Department, Thanh Nhan Hospital, shared with concern: "We have met many patients with difficult circumstances, but Ms. Anh's situation makes us feel extremely sympathetic.

She was single, dirt poor, and when she was admitted to the hospital she had only a little over a hundred thousand. When asked, she just cried, she cried so much that she had no more tears left. She said she had saved her whole life and now she only had a little over a hundred thousand left.

Ms. Anh's life is a series of misfortunes (Photo: Huong Hong).

Since that day, the doctors and nurses in the department have each given her a little bit so that she can have food to eat. Her illness will require treatment for the rest of her life. Therefore, we sincerely hope that Dan Tri newspaper and readers will give her the opportunity to continue her treatment!...".

Sitting silently at the end of the hospital bed, looking up with wet eyes, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh (Ms. Anh's younger sister) choked up and said:

"That day, Ms. Anh called me and said she had a stomachache. Hearing her voice, I guessed she was in a lot of pain, but I didn't think it was that bad. Luckily, she was taken straight to the hospital for surgery in time. If it had been a little later, I don't know if my sister would have survived!...", Ms. Lan Anh sobbed.

For many days now, charity meals and porridge have helped Ms. Anh and her sister stay at the hospital (Photo: Huong Hong).

Wiping away her tears, Lan Anh sadly recounted: Hong Anh and Lan Anh were orphaned at an early age. With no home, no property, no support, the two sisters could only rely on each other and struggle to make a living.

Ms. Lan Anh also "found" a husband, but they were not compatible so they "went their separate ways". Ms. Anh did not get married. When she was young and healthy, she sold goods on the street, washed dishes, worked in restaurants, carried goods... to make a living.

In 2020, Ms. Anh suffered a stroke, and since then her health has declined, and she can no longer do heavy work. The lonely, elderly woman with a pineapple bag of scrap on her shoulder, she wanders around the streets of Hanoi, now sleeping under a bridge, tomorrow on a market corner, barely surviving day by day.

Ms. Lan Anh works as a domestic helper in Giap Bat ward (Hanoi). Unable to bear seeing her sister living on the streets, Ms. Lan Anh uses a portion of her meager salary to rent a small room for her sister to live in.

Thanks to timely colon surgery, Ms. Anh's life was temporarily saved (Photo: Huong Hong).

"Recently, Ms. Anh has been very weak, she can barely do anything. Every day I ask the landlord for rice to bring her to eat. It's hard, but she still has me and her sister. Who would have thought she would get a terminal illness!...", Ms. Lan Anh said and then covered her face and burst into tears.

Speaking to Dan Tri reporter, Dr. To Lan Phuong, Oncology Department, Thanh Nhan Hospital said: "Patient Nguyen Thi Hong Anh was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer."

Dr. Phuong added that Ms. Anh had undergone colon resection surgery. The patient will soon have to undergo 12 rounds of chemotherapy, after which a consultation, assessment and further treatment plan will be given.

"The amount of money the patient needs for the upcoming treatment is about 60-80 million VND, the next stages have not been calculated yet, it is determined that it will be long-term and expensive. Knowing this news, the patient has intended to leave the hospital for the past few days despite the doctors and nurses' best advice and help," Dr. Lan Phuong said with concern.

With only a little over one hundred thousand dong in her pocket, while her illness required long-term and expensive treatment, the lonely woman intended to ask to be discharged from the hospital (Photo: Huong Hong).

It is hard to put into words, in me at this moment is a surge of sympathy, Ms. Anh's whole life is a series of endless misfortunes. To live, to desire to live is an obvious human instinct, but for this lonely woman, it seems to be too much of a luxury!
