Hue is one of the localities with a large number of mai players. This is the time to strip the leaves from the mai trees, preparing for Tet.
The yellow apricot tree has a unique genetic source in Thua Thien Hue and is often called Hue royal apricot. This type of apricot tree has been grown for a long time in royal palaces, mansions, communal houses, pagodas, and private houses. The yellow apricot tree creates a luxurious beauty and becomes a symbol of spring in the ancient capital.
These days, workers of the Hue Green Park Center are busy pruning the leaves of apricot trees around the Hue Citadel area, preparing for a relic site filled with yellow apricot blossoms on Tet holiday.
Leaf stripping, also known as leaf picking, is considered an important step that greatly affects the blooming of apricot flowers. This not only helps the apricot tree to concentrate on growing, but also stimulates the flowers to bloom at the right time.
According to Lao Dong, many workers and specialized vehicles are deployed throughout Hue's large apricot gardens. For short trees, workers will stand or climb on hard branches to strip leaves. For trees that are too tall or have weak branches, workers will use specialized vehicles to prune, limit falls and prevent damage to the trees.
This job of pruning mai leaves usually starts in November or December of the lunar calendar, depending on the weather. At this time, many mai players in Hue are busy pruning leaves and taking care of flowers. During the process of pruning mai leaves, each branch and flower bud is cherished.
At first glance, the workers stripping mai leaves seem to have a light workload, but the workload is not small when there are hundreds of mai trees in front of and inside the Hue Citadel.
Hue's yellow apricot has 5 bright yellow petals and a pure fragrance. The apricot tree is associated with the cultural life of Hue people and is indispensable during Tet.
The time to pluck the apricot leaves is also the time when the Tet atmosphere begins to bustle on the streets of Hue. The apricot trees are carefully and properly cared for by workers, promising to bloom brilliantly during the Lunar New Year 2025.
