In the flow of modern life, when traditional cultural values are at risk of being forgotten, Hoang Xuan Tuyen, born in 1999, a Tay ethnic child in Kieu village, Xuan Giang commune (Quang Binh) has chosen a special path for himself. With a strong love for traditional music, especially the Tinh lute and flute, he has become a typical model for the young generation in preserving and spreading traditional cultural identity.

Born and raised in a space rich in the cultural identity of the Tay people, the sound of the Tinh and Then melodies have been associated with Tuyen's childhood. However, the development of society has gradually faded those values in the eyes of the younger generation, which made him wonder and determined to do something to change. In 2023, Tuyen began his journey of self-studying to play the Tinh and flute through online documents. With perseverance and effort, he quickly mastered the basic techniques, gradually conquering the rustic, clear and profound melodies of the Tinh. For Tuyen, the instrument is not only a musical instrument but also the embodiment of the soul of the Tay people, a bridge between the past and the present.

Sharing about this process, Tuyen said: “At first, self-studying online was not easy because there was no one to guide me directly. I had to watch each video over and over again, paying attention to how to hold the instrument, how to pluck the strings, and how to coordinate the rhythm with the lyrics. There were difficult musical passages that took me a whole week to practice over and over again. But the special thing is that every time the instrument sounds, I feel connected to my roots. It is like a reminder that I am contributing to preserving a valuable part of my nation's heritage. The sound of the Tinh instrument and the flute brings a very special feeling. It makes me feel like I am returning to my childhood memories, when the whole family gathered around the fire, listening to grandparents tell old stories, and singing Then. It is a peace that I want to share with everyone, especially young people. I hope that traditional music is not just a memory but will always exist, accompanying the young generation in modern life.”

Not only self-studying, Tuyen also actively participates in local cultural activities. As a member of the Xuan Giang Commune Folk Artisans Association, he regularly performs at events and cultural exchanges of the village and commune. Through each performance, he tells stories about the origin of musical instruments, how to make the Tinh lute or the spiritual meaning of the Then dance, helping people understand and appreciate cultural values.

Mr. Hoang Van Binh, Chairman of the Xuan Giang Commune Folk Artisans Association, said: “Hoang Xuan Tuyen is a shining example in preserving the Tay ethnic culture. Tuyen is not only passionate about traditional musical instruments such as the Tinh and flute, but also has a deep awareness of preserving and spreading traditional values. He actively participates in cultural events, performs and shares with the community about the meaning and value of musical instruments. Tuyen's perseverance and responsibility truly inspire the younger generation, making an important contribution to preserving the local cultural identity.”

With his efforts, Hoang Xuan Tuyen has become a flame of inspiration, arousing the love of traditional music in the community. His Tinh lute and flute not only remind us of the beauty of tradition but also open the door for the younger generation to understand and love cultural heritage more. In the digital age, Tuyen's efforts are like a cool stream, keeping the Tay cultural identity from fading away. It is also a reminder that, no matter how developed society is, cultural roots are always irreplaceable values that need to be preserved and passed on to future generations. Hoang Xuan Tuyen, with his intense love and unceasing dedication, has been writing a beautiful story about the journey of cultural preservation. An inspiring story, extending cultural values from the past, present and towards the future.
