In recent days, people in 20 alleys in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City have been busy breaking down walls and chiseling houses to widen the alleys. Many narrow alleys are gradually being replaced by spacious, airy roads.

According to the reporter of Giao Thong Newspaper, in alley 549 Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Ward 2 (District 3), even though it was Sunday, people were still busy knocking down walls, dismantling fences, sawing doors... These were the last houses in this alley to be renovated to widen the alley.

Alley 549 is over 220m long, with an average alley area of 2.8 - 3.5m. Before the expansion, the existing structure of the alley was cement concrete, which is now degraded.

The alley’s drainage system is also old and slow. Every time it rains, the rainwater overflows, causing difficulties for traffic participants as well as spoiling the urban beauty.

According to the leader of Ward 2 People's Committee, 105/108 households agreed to donate land to widen this alley to 5m. The remaining three households have heavy house structures and will affect the houses at the beginning of the alley, so the work will be done in the next phase.

Most of the houses in the alley are solidly built, so repairs take a lot of time. After knocking down the walls and narrowing the house area, people continue to paint, cement, tile... However, compared to the alley before being upgraded and expanded, the urban beauty has been greatly improved.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung (84 years old), a resident of alley 549, said that the alley used to be small and difficult for vehicles to travel, especially during the rainy season. After being mobilized, the people agreed to support and started to widen the alley. "The alley is almost finished, there are only a few more houses to be spacious and airy, making it much more convenient for children to go to school and work," said Mr. Hung.

Similarly, Ms. Lan (55 years old), a resident in the alley, said: "Widening the alley not only helps facilitate traffic but also creates conditions for fire prevention and fighting, contributing to protecting people's safety."

In addition to this alley, 19 other alleys in District 3 are being expanded. It is known that the alleys will have concrete pavement, new drainage pipes, telecommunication pipes and fire hydrants installed.

According to the leader of District 3 People's Committee, the success of the movement to donate land to widen alleys is a testament to the power of consensus. In particular, the local government actively promoted, mobilized, and created favorable conditions for people to participate, while the people also demonstrated a sense of community responsibility, willing to donate part of their land to contribute to building an increasingly beautiful city.
