"Old farmer" pioneers in raising fish in cages on the river

Cage fish farming on the river is a new economic model that has appeared in recent years in Chuyen Ngoai commune. But few people know that the pioneer who brought the model of cage fish farming on the river to Chuyen Ngoai is an "old farmer" - Mr. Nguyen Xuan Do, Director of Chuyen Ngoai Cage Fish Aquaculture Cooperative - Member of the Association of the Elderly in Yen My village (Chuyen Ngoai commune). He is not only a pioneer in effectively implementing the economic model of cage fish farming on the river but also helps many local people to get rich from this model.

Having been involved in farming and fish farming for a long time, according to Mr. Do, releasing fish using traditional methods does not bring high economic efficiency, and his family's life is just enough to eat. He always thinks and worries about finding ways to get rich. By chance, during a visit to an economic model organized by the Commune Farmers' Association, he learned about the model of raising fish in cages on the Red River. Realizing that this model is suitable for the natural conditions of a riverside commune like Chuyen Ngoai, he is determined to invest and innovate his family's traditional fish farming method.

In 2015, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Do boldly "started a business" with 20 cages for raising industrial specialty fish with an investment capital of more than 10 billion VND. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Do shared: In the beginning of implementing the model, I encountered many difficulties and doubts from people around me. In 2016, my family lost nearly 20 tons of fish due to storms, strong river flows, and erratic fluctuations. However, with the support of loans, techniques... from departments, organizations, and people in the cooperative... my family revived the farming model and expanded the scale to 30 fish cages, maintaining stable harvests. Currently, the cooperative has grown to 32 member households, with a scale of 200 fish cages, each fish cage earning an average profit of about 15-20 million VND/year. The cooperative creates jobs for more than 60 regular workers and more than 30 seasonal workers - local children, with an average income of 6 million VND/month.

In addition to economic development and creating livelihoods for local people, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Do himself is also an active member, regularly participating in and supporting the activities of the Elderly Association as well as local social activities. With achievements in production and business, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Do was honored to receive a Certificate of Merit from the Provincial People's Committee to commend exemplary elderly people with good economic performance.

Hoang Ha Concrete Company Limited specializes in manufacturing concrete pipes, pavement tiles, transportation business, and construction and installation of works. With experience and prestige in the industry, Hoang Ha Concrete Company Limited, owned by Mr. Nguyen Xuan Vinh, has participated in supplying materials and constructing and installing many large projects inside and outside the province such as: Bac Giang - Lang Son Expressway; Ring Road 4 (connecting Hanoi to Tay Yen Tu); Tam Chuc Pagoda, Bai Dinh; T1 Ha Nam Road; Ha Nam Parallel Road; Cao Bo Expressway, Thanh Hoa; road connecting 2 Hanoi - Hai Phong and Cau Gie Expressways, Ninh Binh; pagoda projects in Truong Sa archipelago... Mr. Nguyen Xuan Vinh himself always strictly complies with legal regulations, fully performs tax obligations; at the same time, regularly participates in contributing to local social security work, the work of the Association of the Elderly at all levels.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Vinh shared: I always tell my family members as well as teach my children and grandchildren that in life, the most important thing is to build good values for those around them. For the elderly who are still able to work, have economic difficulties and need to find a job... I create conditions for them to do suitable jobs at the company such as logistics, cleaning... so that they can be financially independent. For those who have made mistakes but want to become useful people for society, I am willing to teach them a profession, create jobs, stable income, encourage them to stay away from bad paths, and become good citizens.

Mr. Nguyen Van Mai, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chuyen Ngoai Commune, said: Although the elderly members are old and have limited health, they have actively participated in local activities, socio-economic development, maintaining political security, social order and safety, and making significant contributions to the process of building Chuyen Ngoai Commune to become a commune that meets advanced new rural standards. Many economic development models and business production of the elderly in the commune are developing strongly and spreading to all classes of people.
