On the morning of September 30, locals and tourists were able to watch football matches and races of fishermen in Can Gio on stilts, a familiar item for coastal residents.
Since ancient times, stilts have been a familiar tool for fishermen in coastal areas when catching seafood. Nowadays, Can Gio fishermen have created a very unique sport, soccer on stilts.
The football match was held on a special field on the beach, played on a field about 300 square meters wide.
The nearly 1 meter long stilts are attached to the "players'" feet, making it more difficult to walk and compete for the ball.
Mr. Duong Van Luom started using stilts at the age of 20. He and other fishermen used stilts to go to sea to catch shrimp and fish during high tide days. "Playing soccer barefoot on the beach is already difficult, but walking on stilts is even more difficult," said Mr. Duong Van Luom (63 years old).
The match is officiated by 1 referee and 2 assistant referees. Each team has 5 players, playing in 2 halves, each lasting 10 minutes.
As soon as the referee blew the whistle to start the match, the two teams immediately had fierce ball disputes.
The two teams continuously had fierce and dramatic matches.
From a familiar ancient fishing aid, the pair of stilts, fishermen in Can Gio have created a unique sport.
Unlike football matches on the field, the players in this match do not wear shoes, but wear stilts 80cm long, attached to their feet. Therefore, moving and competing for the ball is also more difficult.
An athlete fell down, two referees of the match also came to help this person stand up to continue the match.
At the end of the match, the victory belonged to the red team with a score of 5-1.
The Whale Festival is an indispensable cultural feature of coastal fishermen, closely associated with the whale worship custom of ancient seafarers. This is considered a folk belief passed down from generation to generation and has been recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage since 2013.
